    yeah, that's what I was politely trying to say :) Not that there's anything wrong with having expensive or exotic pizza toppings - it's just natural they will be reflected in the price. Could you have used half the amoutn of sundried toms , or cut them up so they go further?

    It does sound yummy!

    Have you tried the sundried tomatoe puree? or sundried tomato paste? Again , they are just other suggestions to see how you could alter the price without necessarily sacrificing the taste.

    Maybe if you make them again, you could make one pizza with half as much topping with the toppings cut finer - make it half the price and see if it's worth spending the extra if that makes sense? Might be an interesting experiment. Blindfold hubby and do the taste test (or maybe that's a different thread altogether ;) ):rotfl:

    So true. Homemade esp using a pizza stone are vastly better that a supermarket pizza.

    My SIL is a huge pizza fan and goes to Pizza Express regularly. When she told my my homemade pizza was better than Pizza Express I considered that praise indeed.

    If you like blue cheese it is gorgeous on pizza instead of mozarella.

    I think homemade pizza should be compared with a takeaway pizza really! I can make very cheap pizza as a snack that is similar to the ones in the supermarket, or I can make pizzas that are good as a meal, these obviously cost more as they have more toppings and are more substantial!

    In the summer hols when I have dozens of kids mooching around, I often make up a large batch of pizza dough, divide it by however many kids there are, roll it thinly and get them to top it themselves from a selection of tom sauce, cheese, onions, peppers and ham if any spare. Makes a cheap, quick and easy lunch.

    For a pizza night, I'll make the dough at lunchtime so that it has time for a double rising, use a good homemade tom sauce, basil and fresh herbs, goats/feta/mozzarella cheese, salami/chorizo, peppers, onions, toms and a hefty dose of garlic and jalapenos. This is pretty much a meal in itself, and is much requested by oh and the children.

    mummysaver I do the same with the kids. We have loads of extra kids wandering in, not sure where they all come from. Maybe they have heard about the pizza:rotfl:

    We do ours quite cheaply. Cheap bol sauce as the base, mozzarella and cheddar for the top and whatever we fancy for the rest.
    If I served my kids pizza with sundried tomatoes and Prosciutto they would think I was trying to poison them. Sounds gorgeous to me though;)

    If you shop in Lidl - mozzerella is 45p same with Aldi. We use stir in sauce and smear it onto the base - loads left over for another day. Then its topped with mushrooms and olives which are cheaply bought in a jar for under 50p - leaving loads again for another day. We used proscuitto but only because we brought back some from spain - 25 slices for 1 euro. Otherwise - i store whoops ham, whoops chorizo etc and we have pizza when we have stashed enough in the way of toppings.

    You could buy the pizzas but there are no leftovers as above - so its more expensive. Also - if you use proscuitto and sun dried toms - of course the price will go up!

    If you want premium toppings then its probably cheaper - but not tastier to buy supermarket pizzas - if you are happy with cheese and tomato, or ham and mushroom then HM is quids cheaper.

    Regardless of what was on top, it was the lovely base that made it so special, it was a JO recipe (from his at home series/book).

    It is better to use the block mozzarella to make pizza, because it is dry and does not drip wet on the pizza base. In fact sometimes if it is on offer it is cheaper (and just as good) to use the ready-grated mozzarella, as there is no waste at all and you can spread it just where you need. If you like lovely stuff like buffalo mozzarella I would add it, torn in chunks, at the very last minute but make sure you have drained it very well.

    Same if you add fresh herbs like rocket or basil, add them after baking.

    I would never ever buy a tin of tomato that already contains garlic and basil, you are paying for the person that is putting them in the tin! I dislike dry basil but dry oregano or marjoram is ok.

    My pizza sauce is a tin of cheap tomatoes, chopped by me, drained of some of the juice (hate soggy base!), mixed with chopped (by me!) garlic, splash olive oil, pinch dry oregano, pinch salt. Spread sparingly on pizza base then top up with grated mozzarella.

    I also tend to make my own base, which is basic bread dough, only stretched as thin as possible. I let it rest for 20 minutes or so after stretching it so it develops a "crust" and the topping does not sink in the dough.

    I always freeze my grated mozerella cheese bags so my kids dont snack on it. Just bang the pack on the side, then sprinkle from frozen when needed:D
