Can you please provide some advice on the best way forward to claim bank charges up to a total of approx £8000 excluding interest against the Bank of Scotland through the Scottish Claims System.

Can you please advise the total number of years you can claim in Scotland?

Would you advise to pursue interest on a claim of £8000 plus.
I have just recently had an offer from Bank of Scotland for my total charges and interest totalling 6,429 pounds so if you want to claim the interest then go ahead. You can only claim for 5 years back charges in Scotland.

    That's great news Timnjack !!!
    well done !
Am I correct in thinking though that the Financial Ombudsman only deals with cases where a high amount is being claimed ?
Or can you ask for their help at any time ?

You can put your claim through the FO no matter the amount although its quicker if you have done the leg work first by getting your statements and working out your claim. However you can't take the bank to court and ask the FO to handle your claim as well if you see what I mean.

Hi there and thanks. The FO are willing to help with any size of claim and although I had done all the leg work ie, got the statements, totalled the charges, calculated the interest and gave this information to the Ombudsman, the FO had to ask the Bank to give them a list of the charges also to confirm the amounts I was asking for. They couldnt be more helpful, you can even phone them and they will fill out most of the claim form for you and just send it out to you to sign and return to them.

    Oh right I see.

I'm only at the 'we've got 8 weeks to reply' stage at the moment and haven't threatned any court yet.
I've obviously got all my statements/charge details/details of interest added etc.
Would it be easier for mt to put my claim through FO now then ?
    Is there a charge ?

When I first contacted them I did so by phone as I had so many questions. I was advised by them that they would be happy to take on my claim as long as it had been 8 weeks since the date of my first letter to the Bank, as it was just over this period of time I qualified. If you are lucky enough to get an offer or settlement within the 8 weeks time frame then great but if not then just get the form off to FO and include a list of the figures you are claiming and any letters that you have received from the Bank, even delaying ones telling you they are looking into it blah blah. Hope this helps.

That's great - thanks for your help.
I think I'll go down this route now.
    One last thing.

Is there a particular department that are best to handle my claim since im in Scotland ?
And - sorry to be lazy - but do you have their e-mail address or website address ?

    Thanks again.
