  • As above, a log maker is a good alternative to shredders, then disposal in some way. I found one at £14 + postage (no wetting) at Natural Discovery http://www.naturaldiscovery.co.uk/Purchase_logmaker_waste_R126.htm
    Wearing my other one today.
  • Ok slightly off topic, but instead of getting the log maker how about a square plant container/window box or plastic lunch box, put some holes in the bottom to let the water drain out, make up your papermache with shreds and water fill you box and weight/leave to dry!

That shoud save the £15-20 for the log maker!

We spent hours hoing this at nanny's when we were kids! Works best with a portion of newspaper to make it sloppy!
    Smile it confuses people!
  • I previously had one of the cheap hand operated shredders, but the plastic handle did not last very long, so it broke very easily. Yesterday I bought a Cross Cut Shredder from Woolworths for £14.99 - it seems very robust and has a waste bin. It can also shred used credit cards!
No reliance should be placed on the above.
  • I would agree that the it is the quality of what is inside that counts. I bought a cheap one from Asda and it broke after 6 months of careful use. I contacted the Factory in the Far East by email and they sent the replacement gears for free! However it broke again after 12 months and I took it back and got a refund. Its worth remembering that Asda have a free 3 year no quibble guarantee on their electrical products. If you are going for a cheap one get it from a retailer that will take it back without alot of trouble.
Please remember to keep it out of reach of your children as the cutters can be a danger to them.
If you are going to do a lot of shredding you may find that an ex office model second-hand will give better service as it has been designed for the job.
  • OK just a thought here on the Xcut v's non Xcut debate.

If you get a non Xcut feed the paper in a way that cuts up things like credit card numbers i.e. not width ways if a normal letter, and dont forget to mix up all the strips to make it harder.

I found that my parents felt very safe with their new shiny shredder till I dove into the shreds, pulled out 1 strip and told them what their CC number was.

  • X-cut are best,

And next week our LIDL has one for £12.99, a Lervia, 5 sheet with 15L bin.

Best thing about Lidl electricals is they are TuV approved and have a 3 year guarantee.

    Scat ;)
    Moi....? ;)

  • i just got a cross cut from big w yesterday for £14.99 and it is excellent, does credit cards as well. Also when i got it out the bag i noticed the lady on the till had given me my receipt and also the one which i signed to have my debit card debited, it said atore copy on the top, can this payment go through without my signiture? should i take it back? :-/
  • :D No Monin today. Its great news I have been using my new Rexel V25 crosscut shredder and its marvellous. Even better I had looked at shredders and had decided that a cross cutter and a reasonably good quality motor/cutters etc were the important things and then found this Rexel V25 at WH Smiths at Brent Cross last weekend in their grab it sale. It was only £24.99! (Previous price £39.99) and it came with a two year guarantee. When I took it they only had  two left. Not surprising really! I believe I should oil the cutters regularly. Does anyone know how often?
  • I bag it all up and take it to work - much better shredder. The cheaper ones do tend to brake quite easily.
