Tama_J wrote:Just thought I'd add in a few helpful tips, considering I used to work selling these damned things :P! lol
To sum up:
1. I'd definitly recommend purchasing a named brand shredder above an "own" brand, or cheaper brand, such as those found in supermarkets for about £9.99-£14.99. Look to spend about £19.99 on a decent strip-cut shredder. The one I mentioned (Rexel HS.80) is brilliant for the price you should pay (£19.99 or less in most places I'd imagine), and should be good for home and some office use. so, I guess, as a money saving tip.. Make a decent investment, and pay that fiver or so extra for the named brand! As the saying goes - You only get what you pay for
lol.
Excellent post Tama_J (hope you dont mind me editing your quote - it was a long post!). It's always good to get info. from someone "in the know".
As good moneysavers we shouldn't confuse 'Cheapest' with ' Best value for money'.
I received an email from Staples yesterday. They are offering the Rexel HS85 (cross-cut) for £21.99 - reduced from their normal price of £27.98 - Item Number 369504 (not sure if this is on-line only or also in store - hope to check tomorrow).
Staples website also has the Rexel HS80 (strip cut) for £16.99.
My local Wilkinsons in Chelmsford currently has the HS80 for only £14.99
WH Smith own brand strip cut is £14.99. This has its own bin but also extending arms to allow it to rest over any width bin.
WH Smith cross cut is £24.99 (reduced from £39.99) also has a separate slot for credit cards.
Hope this is useful
edit: Just checked - this is on-line only0 -
Just got a Rexel HS-80 strip shredder from Staples, it's a tastey piece of kit !
You only need a cross-cut shredder if you want to TOTALLY obliterate info, but this shredder will destroy documents for re-use and thats enough for me, though I am also confident that the 21 strips that the HS-80 cuts an A4 page into will suffice.
Just another point about Staples - they price on non-Vat so the £16.99 price became £23.31 with Vat and delivery. Still an outstanding price for a branded item.0 -
Get yourself down to Chiltern Mills for an Office Trends shredder at only £5. Not cross-cut. Not for credit cards but bargain price. I got mine in Redcar. Is Office Trends ex-ASDA brand?0

OK, folks, the cross-cut shredders in Woolworths are half-price at the minute. I think that makes them about £15.
I saw them yesterday, and was very cross (geddit?!) with myself for not waiting, as I paid twice this a couple of months ago, even though I was told they'd probably be down in price again at some point. Mrs Impatient, that's me.[0 -

Can I make a suggestion? Buy a spray can of lubricating oil for the blades, it will prolong the life of the shredder. I bought mine at a local stationers.
Also, if you are selective about how much paper you shread you will reduce the amount of paper going through the blades too.
For example, we shred everything with our name and address on it..........but we tear the tiny square with these details off the envelope/letter rather than putting the full item in the shredder.
We put the tear off pieces of paper inside an envelope and then put this envelope in the shredder.
Hope this helps.
