My wife and I used to have Goldfish cards (paid off in full every month) until Barclaycard took it over. We cashed in all our points, stopped using them and moved all spending to our Tesco cards.

I also have an Egg card which I use for my business purchases. When Barclaycard take over Egg (also paid off in full every month) I will stop using that.

I've had them both since they started, it's a great shame.

I view Barclay's the same way as I do Rupert Murdoch; I'll have nothing to do with either of them.

This is one time in my life I am seriously regretting the fact I don't swear!

I *hate* Barclays with a passion, they've mismanaged the accounts of more people I know of than any other financial company. First prize goes to the time when my Gran (who was in her 80s at the time and sharp as a tack) requested that they close her savings account with them, and they closed her current account instead! The first she knew of it was when she started getting letters from utility companies, BT, the council etc. asking when she was going to set up new payment details. In the end my mother had to get involved before they deigned to sort the mess out, and there was never even an official apology, let alone any goodwill gesture due to the stress caused and the time it took to get sorted.

I'll probably leave anyway, but if they so much as TOUCH the cashback T&Cs, that will be definite. Which, of course, is what they want, as those of us who just use the cards for cashback don't make them any profit. The overseas call centre is already the almost-final nail in the coffin, we have daily experience of those at work and just wish they'd never been invented...

Egg employees, I'd just like to say that you've been absolutely *FANTASTIC* over the few short years I've been with you. I've only had cause to contact your call centre a couple of times, but you were always excellent, knowledgeable and polite. :T I'm so sorry you're getting shafted by Berk-lays :(

I don't earn enough for an AMEX card (and wouldn't want one anyway), and I'm not with the Halifax, so it looks like Capital One for me...
Never underestimate the power of the techno-geek... ;)

Egg stopped the mule-ing ages ago didnt they?

No personal experience of Barclays, however an offshore call centre does not bode well (if its not in the script just apologise again).

Retaining the 1% Cashback is the key for me.......no cashey, no likey.

Officially yes, however I think it still works.

From what I've read you have to be very careful on the xfer not to go into debt.
Then it counts as a money transfer and charges apply.
So you have to be careful it's only credit you are xferring.

I think you're correct, I've done a couple in the last year or two.

I won't miss the 1% cashback, as I've just switched to using a 0% spend card (ironically Barclaycard), and investing the saved repayments, which is a better deal. But I will miss the mule facility, even though the prospects of having the opportunity to mule are slim at the moment.

I had a Goldfish card, but previous experience with Barclays meant that I stopped it when Barclays took over. Also, don't believe what Barclays might say. Read this:
    http://www.money.co.uk/article/1000399-barclays-denies-goldfish-rumours.htm

I also stopped my CSMA card when Barclays took that over a few years ago. The CSMA card gave 1% reward on vehicle fuel, and had zero loading on purchases abroad. Initially it was sold to Goldfish Bank, but then ended up with Barclays. I don't recall exactly when the benefits were removed, but during this change of ownership, the rewards were removed, and foreign loading was 3%.

I've still got my Amex which I got for the inital 5% deal but dont use it now (except for a couple of transactions to avoid the dormacy fee of £20) since it dropped to 0.5% for the first tier of cashback,

I've also got basic Classic Capital One card with no fee which I got purely for the added bonus of free Equifax credit reports and credit status warning emails. It onlly offered a low credit limit £300 (£1200 Max) compared to my £15k limit with Egg but as an existing customer I would apply for their World Mastercard with a larger credit limit and cashback even though I'd have to pay a fee. The Equifax facility alone makes it the next best option for me personally if EGG CB dies.

leaving the Egg Card with a positive balance then transfer cash from there to a current account (or spend it earning cashback)
(or transfer it to their Egg Savings account earning cashback - as some did while that lasted)
  • thats me scuppered. Ive been balance transfering between the two cards for years to have BT offers, i doubt that will continue.

I will be interested to see if they let me keep my credit limit as they are for both of them
