Yes but you cannot rely on using it everywhere as it's not widely accepted like VISA and mastercard.
Depends where you shop & eat, but a lot of bargain stores and small restaurants won't take it.

True - I use my Egg card mostly for online purchases or in the bigger stores. I don't eat out that much and am usually with friends where we split the bill so cash is easier, and the same with bargain stores - if I don't use cash there it's easy for me to forget what I'm actually spending :o

I have a distinct feeling of deja vu. ;)

I may have made the same comment about Santander when my A&L current account was being transferred to them last year... Ultimately I made the right call back then. Let's see how this pans out.

I have no interest in being a customer of Barclaycard regardless of the new terms.

I share your sentiment on this.

I see Egg as a local company, bringing jobs to Derby and the East Midlands, and decent service for many years.

With Barclaycard I instantly remember the tacky giveaway inflatable chairs, given out to new students in my early days at uni, in exchange for a signature and a huge inflatable APR to match the chair.

    I shouldn't feel sentimental, but I do!

I feel slightly jealous now. Back in my student days I had a Barclaycard, and it's entirely possible I had to pay for an inflatable chair using it.

Yes, they close it and make it repayment only, so you can still pay off minimum balance but cant spend any more.

Agreed, but that is quite different from calling in an overdraft (from the previous post).

Their terms do not mention how they can close the account (except when relating to credit risk) but as a general rule businesses are entitled to end contracts with reasonable notice, so they are able to close the account i.e. stop any new transactions, if they wish.

As long as you keep to the terms you can continue to pay off the balance over time in accordance with the terms.

Any demand for immediate repayment would be outside the terms and conditions (unlike an overdraft which is always repayable on demand).

Might be a bit sooner than that...

They mention May 2011 for us to become Barclaycard customers.

It is probable that not everyone will actually get a new card...

Will Barclaycard rebrand all Egg cards? Will I have to have a Barclaycard?

Yes as the Egg brand remains with Egg. As we get closer to transferring your account, Barclaycard will be in contact with you and will send you a new card (if you satisfy their reissue criteria).

Me neither, especially not with Barclays Bank's part in the CCE debacle; I'll be off with a good many others I suspect.

As the year's cashback is credited around the early part of this month - I think that will see me departing from Egg at the end of March.

My cashback cards seem to give up on me regularly! The Conran card simply opted out and now Egg are selling out. Both of them were excellent for me - while it lasted. Not much point in the Amex card - so I think it's a move across to Halifax Clarity. It will lose me some 'cashback' .... but at least it fits into the existing portfolio of accounts I hold there.
