    Hi Brassicks
your dilemma is a difficult one........it all depends on how much it would cost to cancel at this sort of notice you might not get anything back and you wouldn't have had a break either!!
If you are worried about the spending money going on frivolities instead of reducing debt look at it this way. You will still go out(probably) at New year anyway and if your destination has cheaper booze (and where doesn't) you might spend less there than here!!! Just a thought:D

I think we can get too wound up about paying off creditors and go on a guilt trip every time we have a little treat. You booked this before you ran into problems, you've budgeted for your expenses. Go ahead and enjoy your break, you will be in a better frame of mind to deal with debt when you get back.

I totally agree with loneranger - I had a holiday booked and paid for to the Bahamas this Summer long before my baby girl was even so much as a twinkle! I went inspite of being heavily in debt, had a great time and actually spent less money than I would have had I stayed at home trying to cheer my self up. You are dealing with your debt and acting responsibly, go and enjoy the break - we're in debt not prison!

And if it helps challenge yourself to see how much fun you can have without spending money while you're there set a target of £20 to come home with - if you manage it you'll feel really proud.

    ..wish I was going too!

It is a trip that was booked before- so it is not as though you have booked it irresponsibly since you were dealing with your debts is it. I agree that from time to time we still need a life. Just do it sensibly - same rules apply re sticking to a budget and not making stupid decisions about what to spend your money on.

Then when you get back, get right back to it. Bit like being on a diet except at Xmas when you can eat what the heck you like, going back to Weightwatchers the first week in January!

Anyway, I am going to Centerparcs with the children for a few days tomorrow. booked it a while ago - need to get away for a few days before Christmas because I really miss my Dad and need some space at this time of year. Sometimes, needing to do something for yourself is as important as trying to clear the debts. I have a strict budget and am not taking any credit or debit cards with me so the cash I will be taking with me is all that we will have to spend.

On an entirely different note, after feeling really down about my debt over the last few days (think that the Dad thing and the run up to Christmas doesn't help all this) but today I did my snowball calculation and if (BIG IF) we can keep at the level of repayments that we currently have, we will be debt free by November 2011.

Having seen it in print makes me SOOOOO want to be there! I am now racking my brains as to how I can keep on top of things. Figured that if I don't eat, I will help my debt as well as my weight. What do you all reckon!!??

Anyway, hope you are all well and managing to enjoy the run up to Christmas!

  • Hi Hypno

Hope you have a brill time away - think you deserve it especially with Christmas coming up and I bet your dad would want you to relax and kick back a little when you can.

Reviewing the finances is always good for motivation - I looked at my budget yesterday and reckon I can save on groceries and travel costs so any bits there are going into my little Target debt pot - one more teeny tiny dolly step...

    Have a great time.

Fish finger sandwiches for christmas lunch this year me thinks!!

It is amazing how all the little changes make the biggest differences. I am sure that is what got us into this mess in the first places "oh it's only £....!"

Stick with it girl - 2007 will be our year.
