Well if that's the case it's just slightly odd how the product is a very snug fit for the 'wrong' display box, and that identical boxes have been wrongly used all across the U.K....

They certainly do come into the store in these boxes - or so the CS staff told me yesterday (am I being naive to believe them ???). I got an RnR on Crayola and the CS woman was grudging as she insisted that the price had obviously gone up and it was unfortunate that whoever put them out FORGOT TO TAKE THEM OUT OF THE BOXES THEY WERE DELIVERED IN !!!

I said that I thought it was sharp practice for tesco to put the price upon goods that had been bought in to be sold at the lower price. The price on the box was NOT a special offer, it was the original correct price and so far as I am aware it is illegal for shops to put higher price stickers on old stock just cos the new stock is bought in at a higher price. I'm sure there was a lot of trouble a while back when small shops were caught putting new higher prices on tins of old stock ie sticking a new label on top of the old lower label. I don't see this is much different - tesco are clearly selling old priced stock at the higher new price. You can tell its a different batch cos the new ones are in different stripey boxes without a price on them.

She wasn't about to agree with me but she dis give me my money and the goods. She also whipped all the packs out of the other boxes - with some difficulaty as they were jammed in tight as the other boxes were full right up.

An odd experience today at my local - spent about £30 on shopping including 2 packs of mispriced chicken - there were about 20 packs left on the shelf.

CS were really quite rude including arguning that the difference in price was "obviously" (i.e. I should have known) for the different sell by dates and the price was changing. I pointed out that the label on the shelf didn't indiate any such thing and I thought it would be corrected at the till. Much muttering later the cs person insits on calling for a supervisor who agrees right away that it is an over charge. CS then starts muttering that I'm "obviously at it".
I asked what she meant but she just repeted the "at it" phrase. I said that I thought I was entitled to be careful about checking prices and picking things with long sell by dates. I also pointed out that I wanted two packs of chiken and that since there was about £100 worth of chicken on the shelf then someone who is "at it" would have filled their trolly with the stuff.
The CS person got my refund and put my recipt in her pocket and walked off to speak to another staff member nearby with my refund in her hands. More muttering and pointing in my drection then CS puts money down on the counter and walks off.

Odd behaviour I thought - however I have resolved that the next time I'm in and I spot an overcharge with that CS person on duty I wont just take what I want for my shopping I'll clear the shelves and stick it in my freezer.

Have CS become more stroppy recently? anyone else seeing this kind of behaviour?

Yes!!! CS at Tescos Irlam (Manchester) are horrid. They kept speaking between each other moaning and complaining. I was thinking of writing to H/O to complain.

It is illegal to over sticker a lower price with a higher price. However, there is nothing illegal about changing a price either up or down

I realise that its putting the stickers on top of old ones thats illegal and that the box thing is a bit different. However, I just meant that its very similar to take a box of goods which has clearly been bought in for sale at one price and to shove it out for sale with a higher price. In this case the oversticker ie the SEL hasn't actually been put on top of the price on the box - but its a close thing ! Its just daft to make it so obvious to customers that Tesco are making extra profit out of them - and are thumbing their noses at us while they are doing it.

Had a similar chicken experience. Was told that I had picked up stock that shouldn't have been put out. Used 'well show me where the correct price for this 'new stock' is displayed' and she turned gruff. Wanted to refund my purchase (no r&r) and then sell me stock that was correctly priced, had brought along 4 packs to do so. Stuck to my guns, supervisor was called and he agreed with me straight away. Then full r&r in silence before asking for name and address (got the usual nonsense).
Did a bit of panto 'why have you given me so much money back?' and had policy explained through gritted teeth. It was as if it was coming out of her wages. Looking forward to visiting her again.
Might invest in an 'at it' badge.

if you see an offer that is out of date surely than can say that it was only available at that price to the date it says and therefore not give you a refund. could someone please explain

It's not the customers responsibility to check for expiry dates, it's the stores.

If an outdated SEL remains it's their fault. It is also in smaller print which is the oldest trick in the book and a great argument to use against stubborn CS staff

hi i dont undastand this r & r thing. if there is a sel tht is lower than the price it scans then fair enough they cant argue but if you see an offer that is out of date surely than can say that it was only available at that price to the date it says and therefore not give you a refund. could someone please explain

I'm a relative newcomer and certainly no expert but, in my experience Cs staff can (and frequently do !) spout a load of old rubbish reasons why you haven't been overcharged.

So far as I have gathered, it is a requirement that pricing is clear and unambiguous. A label with , say, £2.99 on it in fairly large print, means that the product should cost you £2.99 at the checkout. If they charge you 33.49, then you've been diddled ! I don't think an offer expiry date (in very small print) is relevant. I wear contact lenses and can clearly see the larger price labels but I need reading glasses to read dates on the labels - and a magnifying glass as well if i'm expected to read bar codes. Its not my job to go around checking that tesco staff have done their job right - they are paid to get their labelling right and if they leave the wrong price up and i buy it on the basis of that price then i have been persuaded to buy on the basis of a false promise and I expect a refund. CS don't always agree !
