Had a wee pup with suspected EPI so did lots and lots of research and as has been mentioned earlier, it would seem that most dogs have an aversion to grain, so before switching to totally raw, I made sure to buy grain free foods. The difference immediately was amazing - I suppose less c**p in, less c**p out, so to speak!
Try this site for a mid priced selection of hypoallergenic foods, and now even a totally grain free variety:

Excellent customer service and quick delivery.
Just as a rough guide to quality, when buying complete foods, I was always told that 2 out of the first 3 ingredients should be a good protein source (not derivatives or by-products).

could anyone give some advice on this please? My Chow has quite dry skin and the vet suggested Evening Primrose Oil but I found no improvement on this so I am trying the Velcote Skin and Coat Support from zooplus.co.uk as it got some really good reviews on their site and I'm also giving him the Luposan Joint Power Tablets from there as he has a touch of arthritis in his back leg - I checked with the vet first before giving him any of these supplements. I want to do the best for my dogs and cost isn't that much of an issue, but I have found out that the dearest doesn't always mean the best!
also, i am currently feeding my rottweiler chappie (at the vet's suggestion) to try to prevent his wind but it hasnt helped much im afraid. could anyone recommend any food or supplement that could help please? thanksJuly- coconut body shop body butter, pom bear football, mini johnsons lotion, Sally Hansen nail treatments0 -

I have a 2 year old very active black lab and he is fed on Burns. He is very trim, very muscular and has the shiniest coat I've ever seen. His poo is small and easy to clean up. He gets very little else between his two meals, dog biscuit or chew sometimes, very little in the way of human food. A £42 sack of burns lasts 6 weeks. My two previous labs were fed on mixer and canned meat as that was the norm back then. They were both windy and bloated and one had hot spots (weepy sores) that appeared at random places on his body, wish my vet had suggested a good quality food for him.:mad:The devil makes works for idle hands0

its not the protein %age that makes a difference, its the source.
If your food label reads :cereals, meat and animal derivatives, derivatives of vegatable origin, etc etc, your dog is not getting a good protein source, the protein is added in as additives, and coming from cereals and derivatives. Not good, makes for hyper dogs
My 2 are on 30% protein, but are currently fast asleep, werent taken out yesterday, and as yet havent been out today (will go out when i get back from work later) they are fast asleep, and would stay like this for about 3 days, just chilling and sleeping, regardless of whether they got a walk. they are high energy siberian huskies.
This is because the protein source in their food is meat, chicken is the main one, but there is also some fish, the filler is rice, which is loads better than cereals like corn and wheat. and there are no additives and preservatives, thats why they're still asleepI'm not a bloke! :rotfl:My real name is Sinead, Sid is my nickname :rotfl:0 -
Burns and James Wellbeloved. They're expensive but I've always bought them because the dogs have done well on them - I can't stand wet pet food, disgusting!0

Chudleys Sensitive, great for my boys dodgy stomach so the girl gets it too.
Although one of them has decided to add some healthy fats to their diet by nicking an almost full tub of Olivio spread today.... the culprit should be easily identified over the course of the next few poos
My old dog used to go utterly butterly on occasion too.;)Please do not confuse me with other gratefulsforhelp. x0 -
Our little Rottsky puppy we're fostering has just had her first lamb rib bone - it was gone quicker than our 2 ate theirs (although theirs were much bigger
).
Trev. Having an out-of-money experience!

So what brand of food do you feed your huskys0 -
Mine are on Hills at the moment and a little wainwrights wet food as a topper. My eldest can eat anything but the youngest has a sensitive tummy and just found out that she is allergic to chicken and turkey. Trying Hills to see how she gets on but may try Burns or Arden Grange if her tummy doesn't settle.0
