  • Thank you for that :)

I would presume that the board guides and mods have their own private forums. May I suggest that you raise the issue of the terminology of "board guide" and start a discussion of alternatives names. It is very confusing, and this board in particular garnishes a lot of new users. We should make it as easy as possible for them to understand the hierarchy.

That all said, an FAQ/Link guide would be most beneficiary :)
    Right ho.

Well, we have a few suggestions made here and there in the thread - enough to make a start with, anyway.

I have a busy day tomorrow, so perhaps on Thursday I can rough draft a possible layout and then you guys can suggest changes and additions until we get it fine tuned and useful.

I'll rename this thread to add "suggestions needed please" to the title, and start a second thread entitled something on the order of "READ ME FIRST - FAQ's, Links, Terms..." <--that will need fine tuning too :)

As I pretty much said early on in all this - if you (the generic "you") suggest that we need something on XYZ... then you will have to write that something. In some cases I think each section, and perhaps even each item in some areas, may need a degree of collaberation and concensus to be of best use.

Now please bear in mind the following distinction...

I know that I am currently a Board Guide here, and I know that I am the person who has instigated this - but I am not "The Boss" and I am not "in control". I'm "the typist". I know the practicalities of compiling indexes and other resources on the forums, I've done quite a few of them over the years - but you guys will be the ones to decide what goes in it.

    Got it? :)

The only arguments you are likely to hear from me are on the order of "Sheesh! Where the flying fynn am I supposed to fit that in?" (Quiet there at the back!) and certainly will not be such as "That's a load of rubbish - ABC Act of 1863 sez..."

    OK?

squeaky it vexes me that you as a Board Guide had to ask the meaning of DSR...it really does.

    You're welcome. :)

From memory I'm pretty sure that this has been brought up before on the This Site - Suggestions (or its previous incarnation). Since we're still called Board Guides I guess that some suitable alternative wasn't found. Personally, I think if you want this pursued further then the best place to do so would be This Site... that way BG's and members can all have their say.

( I highlighted "and mods" in the quote because we don't have any mods, honest guv.)

And yes, I reckon that many board users here are a) new, and b) tend to be "one time visitors" who will generally leave once their issue has been dealt with.

That, I also reckon, is their loss, because I'm finding the board to be fascinating and interesting. (And not in the sense of the Chinese curse "May you live in interesting times.") :)

You need to refer this whole thread higher up the MSE chain as you've lost it.
  • Gordikin, read the thread though. It seems to me to something indemic in the system rather than this one symtom. There must be private boards as there are with all online messageboards. But I'm getting the impression that it's slightly different here. And to be honest, not in a good way.

And that's a comment against the boards, not squeaky

Gordikin, me old fruit... I can't help you there, sorry.

I assure you that I am indeed capable of looking stuff up, but I deliberately chose not to in order to make the point that the board "might" benefit from having a welcome/info type sticky.

Presumably you've read the last few posts...?

So how about we put all that behind us and start again from fresh?

As I said earlier, not all Board Guides are required to be experts in the field. You might be aware that I've been a very busy bunny on Old Style over the years, but when I was asked if I would help out here I said that while I was interested in the board I didn't know anything about Consumer Rights; the response from the Forum Team was "Oh good!". It would seem that they feel that all they need for this board is an "operational" type rather than an "expert" type.

TBH I think they are right. You guys seem to be doing just fine. You've got a good strong core of regular posters who know their stuff - so you don't really need a lot else. Just someone to move the odd post along and nuke the spam.

And I'm volunteering as a member of the board to put together a sticky... because making stickies isn't a part of the Board Guide's job either. I duz it out of the goodness of me 'art, guv. Honest guv.

    I must have done.

If you are saying that this board should have an expert BG rather than an operational one...

..then as I said before - raise it with the Forum Team.

Is any member of the group happy to put themselves forward for the job? If so - go right ahead. You have my very best wishes, honest.

DSR...a Board Guide on a Consumer Thread on MSE does not know what these 3 letters mean...care to comment?
  • It looks to me as though the powers that be realised there wasn't someone to watch over the Consumer Rights board, and squeaky volunteered. The job in question was a practical one, not a functional one. The problem is the misnomer title "board guide", when in fact the job is nothing to do with guiding people round the board. It's purely a practical one - one which Squeaky has actually taken to heart and tried to communicate with the userbase. However, this has brought out the "fish out of water" element. So it's kind of a case of damned if you do, damned if you don't.

The problem is not squeaky's lack of knowledge of the board, as his job was more maintenance. The problem only came about because he wanted to help out with the board.
