The Best Substitution Ever!

Ordered hamster food and got hamster bedding instead from Tesco. So, a hungry hamster with lots of bedding till I travelled to shops for actual food for it.0

I used to work for Tesco home shopping (ages ago) and I remember one time a picker substituted lemons for bananas as they were both yellow.
To the person who only got 3 out of 4 bags of crisps on multibuy and had another brand subbed....the reason behind this would have been the picker would not have known about the special offer as the hand held computers dont show this.
Although not a substitute another problem with the deliveries was that our store would deliver to towns up to 10 miles away. The customer would order the local newspaper and although the name of the paper was the same, the town was wrong.0 -
....and to the reason behind 1 grape etc I believe this is a mix up between ordering and the way the shopping is shown on the pickers computers. If the weight is not entered when the customer orders then on the pickers computers it just shows as 1 grape and not 1 kilo grapes.0

We couldn't resist this thread. We all know mistakes can be made when it comes to online grocery shopping. Some get two whole chicken instead of chicken wings, and some don't quite get what they ordered. Yet sometimes they can be pure comedy - just read through and report your own.
The winner with out a doubt (so far) is "ordered tampons and got a Twix" (do you own jokes!)
Thanks to everyone who's reported their misgives.

Hi All.
Not sure if there is a thread similar to this but i did have a good peek about and couldn't come across anything similar.
Anyways, basically i thought it would be a good idea to start a thread about the best substitution you've had from a supermarket? Since my debt free crusading days started in 2009 i have changed my ways with my weekly grocery shop. I have near enough downgraded everything on my list to the value range. Ok not everything but about 80%.
I do all my shopping online so i can keep within my v. strict budget and always accept substitutions.
I have noticed whilst having my order delivered on the cheapest rate @ £3 which is normally in the evening. The shelves must be quite bare so i recieve a fair amount of substitutes. For example (just a couple of the deals i've had):
4 x Tesco Value Baby Lotion 500ml @ 11p
Subtituted for 4 x Johnsons baby lotion 500ml @ £2.70!!
This has to be the best one i've ever had tbh!
4 x Tesco Value Cooking Bacon 500g @ 75p (previously £1.85)
Substituted for 4 x Tesco Value Middle Bacon @ £1.92
Ok maybe the picker may feel a bit sorry for me whilst reading the amount of Tesco Value is on my list but......I'm happy with the result.
Just wondering if anyone had some good substitutes?

That's really the best substitute ever!:rotfl:I'm laughing here out loud.0 -
I worked for Tesco Home shopping in the call centre.
Some subs I had phoned through to me...
1. One Brussels sprout instead of a bag of them, in someone's large Xmas shop!! I couldn't stop laughing whilst talking to the customer. This was a common occurrence regarding onions, tomatoes and other loose fruit/veg.
2. A packet of Chinese noodles instead of a tub of Ben & Jerry's ice cream
3. Apples instead of onions
4. A DVD rated 18 instead of a child's U rated DVD!
This happened to me! I ordered 3 bags of frozen and got one in a plastic bag hand picked. I was told by the driver that they had "sold out". Stormed down to the store to find everything in stock. I know they do their packing beforehand but about 80% of my shopping was out of stock, you think they'd either try to call me to rearrange or at least try to get some of the few items I had on my list! (I had about 10 different items just high quantities (5-10) of them).0 -
Absolutely loving this thread and as a shopper for one of the supermarkets can tell you that sometimes it comes down to common sense. The computer offers the substitution and its down to the picker to choose it, so if you know the item you know whether the substitution is a good choice! Before christmas I was picking shopping and the customer wanted cocktail sticks, the item wasn't on the shelf so the computer wanted to substitute.....NAPKINS!!! Luckily I have some common sense so didn't pick it but maybe some are a little short on common sense lol!Jan: Mascara, £50 voucher. Feb: Winnie the Pooh print. March: Travelling man boxset, Benefit lipstick. April: Benefit lipstick, Biscuits. May: Biscuit.Oct: Iphone!!:D November: Chocolate bar.
Massive thx to all comp posters, you're the best!!:A0 -
I was speaking to the ASDA Delivery Driver about substitutes. Apparently, someone order Matey Bubble Bath for their children and got Mates Condoms instead. Seemingly, substitutes, at ASDA at least, are selected by the computer...
Once I ordered a lemon and got Lemon Flash Multi-purpose cleaner instead. The best substitute I received was a whole leg of lamb, instead of a half leg - a saving of £7. It certainly made our Christmas and we had so much left over that we shared it with our neighbour!
Best wishes,

my daughter has had a couple of really silly substitutes. she got sent newborn nappies instead of pyjama pant pullups size 8-15yrs!!!!! Dont think they would fit somehow
and another time instead of two packs of baby nappies she got sent a pack of 2 dummies! work that one out!! :rotfl:

This thread is hilarious! Thanks for cheering me up!
I thought it was bad when I ordered cheese and was given eggs....which were already in my order anyway. The driver mentioned it being something about the nearest product code appearing on the system. You'd think a little bit of common sense would suggest substituting it with another brand of cheese and not eggs...I could have a bigger omlette but without any cheese I suppose! hehe.
My OH's cousin once ordered three bottles of wine in an offer and was given 9 bottles!! She was very happy with that! Whereas we only got a few more expensive bottles and they charged more than the 3 for £10 - Tesco were fab and refunded the difference. I'm overall always really pleased with my substitutions but I think my order comes from a rather large store and they tend to have everything in stock most times.
The only thing I can never understand though is replacing plain pizzas with meat feasts (totally not my kind of thing) and replacing things like salt and vinegar crisps with sweet chili or other flavour rather than going for the flavour in a different brand. Seems they substitute within brands rather than items at times....like the poster above who mentioned the single duvet for a double! This time last year - 3 credit cards and 2 overdrafts maxed out. This year - no overdrafts and one card with reasonable balance! It's strangely satisfying getting them cleared!0 -
Hahaha this has had me smiling all afternoon!
I am not really near a large supermarket so do get my shopping delivered, Sainsburys were always substituting with something more expensive and annoying me, and never sending things like milk or bread and like many on here, I just dont believe they didnt have anything!
Get everything from Ocado now, who do the picking in a warehouse, not the store, so very few substitons, and thay have a price match with tesco for lots of things too, although def are a bit on the pricy side! But they do text you beforehand to tell you what the substitutions will be.
Best one though was when the driver had his van broken into and so would be late. We couldnt wait any longer for the delivery (was Friday night and wanted to go out) so they brought it the next morning, minus a couple of frozen things, and changed us for none of it (aound £70)! Following order we got a free bottle of wine as apology for the late delivery the time before. Have never used anyone else since!:beer:0
