  • I have received a letter from nationwide today saying they won't refund my charges and so will be writing tomorrow threatening the court action!
Am continuing to feel optimistic though
  • Hi,

I am going to send off the 1st letter to Nationwide to start reclaiming my bank charges within the next day or so but I just want to clarify a few things with you experts.

I have set up another current account with Alliance & Leicester & have sent off their direct debit switching service form today so they can swap all my direct debits from Nationwide so I am covered if they close my account.

    But

I have 2 accounts (one in joint names & one in my name).

Joint account has an overdraft of £1350, which I use most months & which A&L have matched.

Account just in my name has an overdraft of £1900 which is constantly £1890 overdrawn.

    My questions are:

Do I send a seperate letter for each account or can I just request both sets of statements in 1 letter?

If I am claiming for 2 accounts do I need to pay 2 x £10 for the statements for each account??

I assume that I can still claim for all the charges I received for non direct debit payments even though I was constantly overdrawn (but within limit) when the charges were incurred.

Any replies would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

    Rgds
    Daniel

  • Thanks. Today I filed my claim with Money Claim Line, and all day I've had this uneasy feeling, like MAYBE it will all go wrong. I also bank (banked?) with Nationwide, so to read that you got all your money back is music to my ears!!
    Thanks to all of you!!
  • bookend57, dont feel uneasy!! I felt like that w2hen i issued moneyclaim against Lloyds but you know what they entered a defence and a week later gave me the full amount + costs!!!
Go for it and don't look back!!
  • I've banked with Nationwide for years and years and have twice had charges attached to my account for returned cheques - my own fault because I didn't get funds transferred quickly enough. When I've written to them they have waived the £30.

However, (careless again) I missed the due transfer by 24hrs so duly got a notice of a 30 quid charge. I wrote my cringing letter but have just got a reply reminding me of the terms and conditions when I opened my account and sticking to the charge on my account.

I read in one of the national papers that Nationwide iis one of the building societies closing the accounts of customers who reclaim charges so my dilemna is whether to challenge this excessive charge and risk them closing my account.

They must know that long standing customers will be in line for windfall funds if and when the society demutualises or gets taken over so won't want to risk their customer status.

What do you reckon? Is it worth persuing this? Does anyone have any experience here? I feel like changing my account anyway but the words 'cutting your nose off....' spring to mind.
  • Forgive me please I am new!!

I don't have a clue where this will end up, if anywhere, but I thought...if I put it in 2 places, someone might see it!

Today, I posted a letter to Nationwide requesting details of charges over the last 6 years.

I spoke to a very helpful senior advisor who told me where to send the request. She even thanked me for the call and wished me a good day!!!

How long will this nice attitude last I wonder? :p

    Oh well....wish me luck!:o

    Hi all

firstly id like to say a big hi to all, Martin & Radio2 have been a valuable source of important information.

Ok im trying to recover around £1300 in charges and interest from my building society they sent me a letter this morning,

The basic out line is as follows:

They thanked me for taking the time to get in touch and went on to say they are aware of speculation about fees and charges in the media and that the Office of fair trading has issued a directive regarding credit cards.

The second paragraph goes on to say that if they allow payment of unpaid DD and other items they make charges in accordance with the terms and conditions laid out when i signed up for the account and i signed an acceptance of these charges.

the third paragraph went on to say that the nationwide is open and transparent regarding its fees and openly include charges debited on all its statements and if i feel i cannot abide with the tariffs then it may be wise to open another account else where.

and lastly they said they are unable to refund my charges and give me a contact to discuss the matter.

Is this kind of letter what everyone else gets and if so can i now go to stage three a letter concerning court action?

i mentioned in the first letter that i have account records for two years but withold the right to claim for the five years, however that turns out to be six years and how do i get them to release that detail to me now ive written to them? it may be now they might refuse to give me the details i need to claim all amounts. I gave them the chance to settle for the two years i have records from but they are not even going to entertain that either.

so where do i stand now on this matter.

    Regards David from Luton

PS: it would be a good thing to be able to upload letters to this site so all can see the exact language used in replys from Banks ect, unless ive missed something you can only upload urls.

    Hi David,
I too have just started claiming charges and got a letter saying exactly what yours says. Glad to know its just standard.
I will now do the " right then, mateys, I'm taking you to court" stuff.
Glad that can be done online as I would be definitely put off having to do it in person.
Their letter made me cross as they implied they had paid these DD's etc, whcih had made me go overdrawn, but they hadn't, so it's not like thsy've lost any money.
    Cheeky blighters!
    Good luck.

  • Ive had the same letters as have been posted here. i gave them their 14 days to respond and sent the court threatening letter on the 20th jan (which was signed for on the 23rd), and they didnt write back til friday (9th feb), where they thankd me for my letter of the 7th of feb!! how cheeky is that!?!?

Anyway, last night i filed court proceedings with moneyclaim for about £1100. how long will it take for them to approve my case, and begin the 14 day countdown. i have already opened another account with HSBC, so im ready for them to close my account.
