  • What currency do you need Electric? If its USD by any chance then good rates should be available at moment as its recently improved (from about 1.54 to 1.60 which means that for every $1000 you buy its currently around £24 cheaper than it was - these are bank rates BTW rather than buying rates!)

In any case Martin has a good currency buying guide which should help you find out where the best place to buy is. It's still all of a bit of a gamble though because you never really know whether rates are going to improve or get worse from one day to the next.

We always shop around for our currency - last time we used Thomas Cook who gave the best online rate on that day and they honoured their online rate in store when we asked the manager (armed with a printed list of rates offered by their competitors).

However we no longer get a lot of currency out as we both have Halifax Clarity Cards and these offer excellent conversion rates for purchase tranasactions. (As well as £5.00 per month reward for CA customers)

I have the clarity card too :) need euros for small spends (little places that mightn't take the cc)

I've used martins currency checker thing before - was intrigued by the idea of advanced purchase offer thingy that katsu mentioned :)

I think all the prepaid cards charge you yo load money? I use my clarity card to withdraw euros (a CREDIT CARD to withdraw CASH :eek::eek::eek:) - no charge and a minimal amount of interest charged, plus you can draw it out when you need it rather than end up with a load in your purse/on a card. Once you get over the initial trauma it's great.

You could arrange a payment on your card while you're away to avoid some interest - but you can't go into credit on it (dk what they actually do if you go into credit). I was charged less than £3 interest on £700 so not really worth it. Plus I got my £5, so they actually paid me £2 to withdraw it :).

I haven't posted on here for a while & it's a bit early to be saving money, but just off to find cheap breakdown cover :).
A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort
