I read something quite different in this post :o

Assuming it was a serious question, posting "is it worth it?" - I can't imagine anyone who posts on small things threads sees it as anything other than worthwhile.

Did an app food order to take advantage of a free delivery code

Is that code still around? Also, I have a linky for referring people to one of our favourite survey sites...

My parents always told me 'look after the pennies and the pounds will look after themselves'.

And its quite true as dribble into my savings and now have £50k! My H2B thinks I'm a bit of a miser but then he has no savings so who is he to critise!

Since I last posted (which is ages ago) I have
    • Opened Santander ISA just before they dropped the rate
    • Set up S/O into it so it will be full by April
    • Done a MS worth £15
    • Arranged to spend Saturday night with friends parrent in beautiful Cornwall (free at their house)
    • Been away with work two night this week so did not spend any of my own money for 3 days incl food and drink.
    Not so good stuff
    • Spend £37 while doing MS but got some freebies which could be sold on Ebay
    • Arrange to spend Sunday night in 4 star hotel in Cornwall was a good deal until they only had superior rooms left. Haggled and got £60 off the supplement though
Keep up the good work yes small savings might not seem much but being mortgage free is so worth it. I did it 9 years early and don't regret it one bit.

  • Went to my local HSBC today, armed with the contents of my mortgage pig. Given that they don't have a counter there, I assumed they'd have the machines for paying in change - but they don't :(

At least I was able to walk away with a big handful of bank change bags and it wasn't a special trip into the town centre - would have made the journey anyway.

Got home again and counted the contents of piggy out - now have £20 that is going to be paid straight against the mortgage, with some change left in piggy. The £20 is all bagged up in the new change bags, just need to pay it in without making a special trip to do so.

Been a bit of an expensive weekend for me - treating my mum as I can't get down here for her birthday weekend next week.

I finally got to grips with the expense claiming system (sheeesh!) and claimed back £60 or so of Oyster card travel - all the tops ups are put on my new shiny Amex cashback credit card and I am finally starting with a client based in the city, so that will be close to a tenner a day each time I go in (at least 3 times a week) - sure I will have to wait until a year's anniversary to get it back but with that and diesel costs (around £60 to fill up my car) - I'm sure it will all mount up!

I also got myself an MBNA Play.com credit card and thanks to having to order a claim-back-able course on it (Amex not accepted) I have already accumulated enough points for a £25 Play.com voucher, and as there is a certain 6-film box set coming out shortly (not to mention the Limited Edition film cell as a special Play.com offer)... I think one of my Bank Holiday monday treats from all the tasks I have set myself, is to order that and redeem my points so to take off almost half of the cost. And of course it will be ordered from Quicdco so more cash back.

Finally - I have no food in the house. The Hurdler cupboards are bare - and my mum will be sending me back to Londinium with lots of Mauritian food takeaway - although I really do have to go to Tesco. I use a ClubcardPlus - a savings scheme Tesco introduced linked to the Clubcard so I get double points and a smidgeon of interest on the money accumulating in the account. I might actually use some of the Vol. Redundancy money to bump up that account so that I don't have to keep resorting to credit cards when the £75 a month I put away in there disappears in grocery shopping, and then I might be getting a smidge more in interest too.

I am getting an advance for my first paycheck as they left me off the payroll, but it gives me time to register for the company health plan, critical illness cover, and for me to find an independent pension (as I can't qualify for the company pension until I have worked there a year, and I fully intend to be in my new career as a journo ASAP!)...

My focus on money saving this week will be taking in a bag of snacks (nuts and fruit) to work so that I don't raid the sweetie machines, and making sure I have breakfast before leaving for work (again so I am not tempted to buy anything on the way in).

  • Here's where the "little things" come back to bite you :D

As I've said above, I have my hair short so instead of paying the barber £8 to £10 per cut (which I used to have done frighteningly often!), I do it myself with clippers.

Cut my hair again tonight and the guard slipped, so I scalped myself on part of my hair. Unfortunately this meant I had to cut it shorter than usual with a grade 1 all over!

    It's a little "close" :D
