  • Congratulations Lauren_1!

Definitely agree that good eyesight isn't something to be taken forgranted. My mum got diagnosed with glaucoma at a very early stage (after she ended up in casualty after poking herself in the eye!!) and both my parents have had cateracts so I'm pretty paranoid about getting my eyesight checked regularly.

Where do you live (she says, bitterly aware it's probably nowhere near her)?

I'm up in Scotland - but I used this website to find my nearest co-op http://www.sustainweb.org/foodcoops/finder/

It is going to sound bad but i am sooo mad at her...i have sympathy for her too...she is having some probs at the mo..her son said that before christmas she literally threw herself down the stairs..because she wants to go and live with him and his wife...thing is they don't want her there..apparently she can be hard work..and they almost split up..seems she is determined to get there come hell or high water...i too have the sympathy for the train drivers..my brother is a copper and has had to go and literally pick up the pieces from one of these incidents..he still has nightmares..my other brothers MIL is a copper too(surrounded by the !!!!!!s)..and she has to deal with it on a monthly basis..not fair on all concerned...

I don't think it's bad that you're angry at her, flowertotmum - your family was put at risk by her actions.

Unfortunately she clearly has mental health issues which mean that she isn't capable of seeing beyond her own "needs" - not that that's any consolation to you, no doubt!

We had a lady move into our Home some years ago who wanted to live with her daughter - and unfortunately it was impossible for her daughter to have her. The lady made her own, her daughter's and everyone who came into contact with her's life a misery, because she had an idee fixe that if she behaved like that, she would eventually get her own way. Such a waste. She could have had a really happy time in the Home - her daughter visited regularly and she had every comfort - but she died having spent the last few years of her life being as bitter as it was possible to be because she couldn't have her way.

I only hope your neighbour can get proper help so she doesn't end up the same way.

That is so brilliant, thank you - there's one reasonably near me so I will check it out. Woohoo!

Reporting back.....my little taste panel ( myself, sister and friend) have given a thumbs up to the pearl barley risotto leftovers. As I'd left out the salsa, I decided that cold, the flavours needed a little zinging-up ( my personal term, of course ;)) So I added a really simple vinaigrette, a few baby spinach leaves, some left over shredded chicken and for crunch , toasted pine nuts, cucumber and peppers. I can see this becoming something of summery picnic favourite.

Beccah - that is absolutely wonderful. I will definitely try it cold in the future. Couldn't agree with you more about 'zinging-up' (copyright Beccah) - pasta, bulghar wheat, cous cous or any of the 'grainy/starchy' type 'carriers' can always take good flavouring when cold.

Mmmm I love picnics anyway - but looking forward to the summer even more now!

Thanks for the feedback - very much appreciated and valued.

It used to be possible to die from gas inhalation when it was the old gas derived from coal but that hasn't been the case for many years now since natural gas came in. So turning on the gas taps was simply a risk to everyone around. I know people talk about suicide attempts often being a 'cry for help' but there is a sort of rationality behind those - they want to be found. Doing something so very dangerous means either that she wasn't thinking rationally at all and has real mental health problems or else it was a deeply egotistical disregard for others. From what you say FTM, it sounds rather like the latter. Either way it sounds as if having her to live with him is the last thing her son should do - for the sake of his own family
It doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!
  • Evening all. Big congratulations to Lauren on the birth of your baby. Welcome to all lurkers and newbies. FTM your party food sounds yummy. I love a good trifle - save me some will you?!

Half term here and so far I have managed to entertain my girls without spending too much money. I'm not sure what we are doing tomorrow though...

The microwave appears to have died today. It isn't heating things up at all. The combi part works, but not the normal bit :( I can't find the receipt, but I think it is over 12 months' old anyway so I don't think it would do any good to try and complain about it. It was from tesco's originally and not very expensive but still, another thing to replace. We do use it a lot, especially for heating up things or defrosting soup, bolognaise, whatever from the freezer. Everything seems to be on it's last legs in this house! I'm holding my breath for the day the fridge finally goes bang (it makes very strange loud noises at times), the washing machine (which has fits every now and again and has to be manually emptied and restarted a few times) and the boiler (VERY funny loud noises and at least 15 years old apparently). We don't have savings for these things. We are too busy trying to repay debts.

Not very OS tea tonight - attempted to make a fried rice-type thing but something went wrong and it tasted absolutely foul. The kids stared at the table and picked at it - even I couldn't eat it. So I cooked a pizza and salad for us instead :S Still, it's not very often that food has to be thrown away and it was only rice and reduced stirfry veg (10p) - there was no meat, so that makes me feel a little better.
:D Skint but happy with my lovely family :D

    Hypnotherapy rocks :j

7 week wonder - thanks for the link about food co-ops - there are some in our local area that I have never heard of and therefore didn't know existed! So will investigate further - a wonderful tip, thank you so much.
