How to Get Through The Tough Times The Old Style Way.

  • Another long-time lurker coming out of the wood-work here! Thank you so much to JackieGlasgow for re-starting the thread: and I love your signature. I'm trying to write a PhD thesis at the moment so it really rings true. I think I might copy it out and put it above my desk (if that's ok)

I'm worried our tough times are just around the corner as my current contract is up in August. I try to be as OS as I can: lots of cooking from scratch, hens and veg in the garden and as much reducing, re-using and recycling as possible. I have to confess we're not very good at OS clothes and DIY, so something to work on there.

But today I'm celebrating as in the last 24 hours, encouraged by this thread plus watching "The people's supermarket" on TV I have: *finally* caught up with this thread; had a home visit from some nice transition/energy saving trust folk who have come up with lots of energy saving ideas for us (and lent us one of those power monitoring thingies: boy is it addictive!); and received my first delivery from our local food co-op. Amazing, fruit and veg cheaper than the supermarket; great quality and they deliver free if your order is over £5 (easy as OH is on a healthy eating kick with fruit replacing sweets and bacon rolls at work!)

Anyway, I will probably lurk far more than I will post, but just thought I would pop in and say hello!

Anyway..just had some rather scary news...the lady who lives 2 doors away from me tried to commit suicide last night..turned all gas appliances on full blast and took all her pills...if it wasn't for the care worker going then well i might not be here nor my family, nor the family next door to her...feel sad for her but angry at the same time..how could she do it???..her son is furious with her and is refusing to speak to her..the hospital will not let her out either..very scary ...
    got to go
    back later

    MYGAWD!!!!

The antisocial madam quite frankly. One can only feel sorry for people who are so desperate that they try and commit suicide normally - but my first reaction to her would be blinding fury at putting other people at risk in the process. That is SO not on. No matter how bad one feels one should NOT put other people at risk of harm like that and my first reaction would not be a charitable one in those circumstances...

Even worse than where people leap in front of a train - without stopping to think about the poor traindriver (who gets traumatised by someone having done this - even though he knows its not his fault in any way and he slammed on the brakes as fast as he could). A lot of traindrivers have been put through this experience several times over - its an occupational hazard for them unfortunately.

I really really DO understand how someone could feel in such "a bad place" - but, if they are determined to do this, they should think of a way that wont hurt other people in the process...

    How awful for you.((((((((()))))))

I was diagnosed with glaucoma in both eyes last year when I went to find out about laser eye surgery - and they wouldn't do the laser surgery as a result. It involves putting suction on the eye while they reshape the cornea (sorry if this is too much info for sensitive ones) and that increases the intra ocular pressure albeit only momentarily. Increased pressure in the eye is the only risk factor they can do anything about so Moorfields won't do laser surgery for people with glaucoma. So I'm still wearing glasses but very thankful I was diagnosed before there was too much damage to my sight (vanity has its uses)

Are you on drops for the glaucoma? Surely an op (I assume you are talking about a trabeculectomy) would only be used for glaucoma if the drops are not reducing the pressure enough?

I have to say, I am a woman with a mission now about spreading the word re the importance of regular eye tests. It was only 2.5 years since my last eye test so, yes, I was a bit overdue but only by a few months (I was down for testing every 2 years). But in that time I had developed glaucoma which was sufficiently advanced that there is already a small blind spot in my left eye - fortunately fully compensated for by the right eye, so I have been allowed to keep my driving licence for the next three years, then it will be reviewed by the DVLA again
It doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!

İn turkey they do alsorts of ops that uk docs shy away from--my sister has small cateracts at the edge of her lenses which are causing her to see only in black and white. the uk docs refuse to operate but out here it is standard and not costly to rectify.

The lazer surgery they reduced the 'reading' of the glaucoma-it downrated it to acceptable at the last appointment but he didnt rule another op out. He says the operation to deal with the glaucoma is simple but i needed 3 months to settle the astigmatism.

de1amo, RE "what product can you think of that is universally priced that i can gauge things on?"

For many years the Economist (I think) has published a "Big Mac" index each year! Apparently that's one of the few things which is sold virtually everywhere.

You have my deepest sympathies on the astigmatism front...I find that when buying glasses, well over 3/4's of the price that I pay, is purely to thin my lens down so that they don't resemble coke bottles. Ohh the joys of mis-shapen eyeballs.
Sanity is the playground of the unimaginative!

I don't want to fall foul of the forum rules about health advice but all I would say is make sure you are fully informed before you make any decisions. Eyesight is too important
