Anyway, on a different note, does anyone know any good easy crocheting guides on the web? I would really like to learn.
Vesper, I really feel for you about your neighbours - we had druggies next to us after the man who had run it as holiday flats sold it and the new landlord put in all the people that social services had given up on - wouldn't let the kids out by themselves for a while. Luckily, the neighbours all rallied round and got the bad ones moved on - and we had nice neighbours after that :T
On the subject of crochet, nothing beats a good video, I think, so you could try this, which has written instructions and links to videos. Hope it helps.0 -
im having my first drink of the week which as usual gets me to thinking!
Sorry to hear about your neighbourly disharmony--in my block back in the uk they get heavy handed with any tennants--they threaten as a management to take action against the landlord to deal or be taken to court!--put me off renting my place out for awhile!
İ was reading on the main threads about the concept of value--as i live abroad and am constantly musing the value of the pound before transfering money out of the uk- what level the pound offers good buying value--what product can you think of that is universally priced that i can gauge things on? the only items i can think of is coke or maybe retail prices of cars!--does anyone have any forumla!
Anyway its been a long week and its only wednesday--i have been doing my usual endless calculating of finance--been doing lots of meditation so only resorting tonight to a drink out of TGFI syndrome because i am virtually free for the next 2 daysmfw'11 No68- 55k mortgage İO--little to nothing saved! i must do better.0 -

My poor ds's eyesight has deteriorated again and his lenses for his glasses are going to be quit thick. I decided that I would pay the extra £35 for him to have thin light ones made . I hope he can wear contacts when he is older as I am sure it will work out cheaper for him once he is classed as an adult (he is 14 now). I have always thought its a bit unfair that anyone who cannot function without wearing glasses has to pay so much. Its not like he (like many others) can just wear them for certain tasks. Without them he cannot see past the end of his arm:(
Welcome new folk
Bertiebots - I was 14 when I started wearing contacts - I think my Mum decided I had enough on my plate being a redhead, freckly and "train track" braces, and gave in to my pleas to have one less thing to get picked on over. I too have quite bad eyesight, and the thinner lenses make so much difference to my confidence if I do wear my specs. I had a quick look and it looks like your wee man might be able to have an NHS voucher toward the cost of lenses
here, and buy them online if you do, it's waaaaaay cheaper! If you get the first lot from the optician they will show your son how to look after them properly.

Hi Vesper
I tried using some online guides but didn't get on very well, so eventually ended up getting "The Happy Hooker" book by Debbie Stoller and it's brill. In three days I have learnt to do the basics, some fancy stitches and finished a square, a coaster and a flower. My library ordered it in for me0 -
Thanks for your sympathy, Ceridwen. Yes. I have got places I can and do camp out; SuperGran's living room floor with my blow-up mattress and sleeping bag, Friend K five mins away on the sofa bed, can't do Friend R on the next street at the mo as she has a lodger on her sofa bed. Times are tough since her redundancy........My family are 1 hour away which is normally just perfect but I can't run in and out at whim (would be welcome but can't afford the bus fare).
Trouble is, I have a weird foible that I don't ususally sleep on the first night away from my own bed, anyway! If it's quiet this evening, I shall go to bed about 7 pm and play catch up.
The lottie shed was under serious contemplation but is so full that it would be a case of huddling in a ball on the floor and there are spiders in there big enough to saddle up and ride.
Thankx for the good wishes. Murder is still being considered as a viable option.
Re karma, one of the things I do is answer homelessness enquiries both on the telephone and f-2-f, so it's perfectly possible that Idiot Boy will pitch up in front of me one day, bleating about his housing situation.......I want to see the blood drain from his face when he recognises me...........:rotfl:
Oh...that would be SUCH "poetic justice" as you say if Idiot Boy ever does end up in front of you in your "official capacity":rotfl::rotfl:. I guess you've filled everyone in at work on his capers - it would be as well to do so in case you're on holiday on Retribution Day.:D
Hmmm...don't suppose you could get a second allotment shed on Freecycle/Freegle or something to put up the allotment to act as the "real" allotment shed and "posh up" the original shed in case of need could you?
Leastways you have a couple of boltholes if need be. I know what you mean about disturbed nights sleep the first night anywhere else - I have that too. I'm guessing it would be less disturbed than lying there with noise blasting through though??0 -
i had my eyes operated on in an attempt to correct them during the summer --it cost me about 800 quid for both eyes--i had very bad astigmitism that hadnt changed for years but it was found that i had glaucoma forming in my left eye--the op improved my eyesight so that i no longer wear glasses but i wouldnt say i am perfect--i need to go for a final consultation to see if i need another op for the glaucoma--bright light --looking from dark to light is the most difficult but other than that i am fine
Turkey is great and cheap for cosmetic stuff--i am thinking about having my hairline improved and they quote 1800 quid whereas the prices start at about 5k in the uk--and i need 2 ops which would mean nearer 10k in the uk!mfw'11 No68- 55k mortgage İO--little to nothing saved! i must do better.0 -
He's due to be taken to court next week....speed the eviction!!!!!!!
Just seen that - good news:D. Fingers crossed...
Liked that phrase from another poster, ie "his karma bank is in massive overdraft":rotfl:
Hmmm...off to think of variations on that theme. Your starter for five = he's in a significant negative equity situation.
Then theres the phrase about "A lot of cockerels will be needed to keep those chickens in order - a lot of them are coming home to roost".
I'm on a roll here....:rotfl:
BTW - Reading on through the posts - GreyQueen if you want to "borrow" my signature you're welcome - I dont have the copyright on it....0 -
Grey queen have you ever thought of just leaving your music on loud during the time you are out to work in the day--he has to sleep some time!!mfw'11 No68- 55k mortgage İO--little to nothing saved! i must do better.0

Anyway..just had some rather scary news...the lady who lives 2 doors away from me tried to commit suicide last night..turned all gas appliances on full blast and took all her pills...if it wasn't for the care worker going then well i might not be here nor my family, nor the family next door to her...feel sad for her but angry at the same time..how could she do it???..her son is furious with her and is refusing to speak to her..the hospital will not let her out either..very scary ...
got to go
back later

Try working in a nursing home. Residents feel that it is perfectly acceptable to come and sit at my desk while I am on the phone having quite confidential conversations about financial and/or health matters with someone else. The number of times I have had to interrupt the caller and ask my "visitor" if they could just excuse me a moment while I finish this phone call... to be greeted by great harumphs and "well, I am in rather a hurry" or worse, I won't keep you a moment, dear, I just wanted to know... and then they're off on a great long explanation and I am waving frantically at my colleagues to see if they can head them off at the pass.
Still, if you're 97, why the hell SHOULD you wait for anyone else? :rotfl:
Answer to that question "Because you have all the time in the world" (ie no job/housework/childcare/etc to do).
Maybe you could get one of those jokey tone notices made and put up visibly? I cant think how to phrase it offhand - but it could be jokingly put that "I know you have plenty of time - but I'M at work. Please wait your turn". Thats not the wording I would suggest - but there must be some "jokey" phrase that would convey "You'll have to wait - you have time - I dont".0
