Morning all. Blimey, I leave this thread for 14 hours and it takes me ages to catch up. I'm feeling much much more like a human being today as came home yesterday, into my jammies and slept 4.15-6.15pm, up for a cheapie pizza out of the freezer, some chats on the phone then back to bed at 9.15pm. Not too much disturbance from Idiot Boy. Zero housework, life is contracted down to eating and sleeping. Have one of my 5 hour workdays today, which are my longest, and pretty hard to handle (I have ME) but at least I feel functional. Yaayyyyyyyyyyy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'm another spec-wearer, have been since 13, myopia and later astigmatism. I've found it very annoying over the years that some body-parts are covered under the NHS and some aren't, like EYEBALLS. I'd second advice about keeping up with your eyetests, I'm under consultant's orders to have them annually as my meds could damage my sight, fortunately I qualify for freebies and a little help towards cost of new glasses, but it still means parting with the best part of £200. Am budgetting ahead for new windows in June.
Blood ran a bit cold about the narrowly-averted gas explosion. A few years before I moved into Shoebox Towers, we had an explosion a few doors away. The nitwit got sh*tfaced drunk in another town, tried to walk home along the railway line (20 miles!) was picked up by the Police and delivered home, decided to off himself and turned on the gas oven. Then he decided he didn't feel like suicide, he felt like a fag. Boom! It was just before midnight. He blew up his silly self (neighbours got him out with only slight injuries) and destroyed his own and 5 other flats. Literally blew the side of the building out, flames up to heaven. Fire brigade got everyone out but those 6 flats had to be rebuilt and their occupants lost everything.
I feel bad that some people are so wretched that suicide seems their only viable option but it's scary living in high density housing with people who may do such dangrous things. The guy in the flat opposite mine is mentally ill but has disengaged from his support workers, has his flat crammed floor to ceiling with carp lifted from skips and is self-disconnected from the pre-payment meter (hence candles being used in there). He buys weed from another dealer neighbour and gambles what little he has, but no one can do anything. There's an incredible fire risk, the stench emanating from his home is unbelievable and, if he brings something into his flat infested with bedbugs, they'll migrate thru into his neighbour's homes. The downside to so-called care in the community......
Police have been seen around the 'hood with an Alsation, got to be one of their drug-sniffer dogs, so maybe we'll have some raids soon. One of the flats is so bad, they won't take the dogs in (needles underfoot) but Soc Services are quite happy for the druggy dad to have custody of his young son in there......Often think I'm living in a mad world and can I go back to my own planet NOW?!
Kettle's on, I'm feeling bouncy, Gawd help the customers due to be served by this particular customer services peep. Go, GQ, Go!
Every increased possession loads us with a new weariness.

The sun is out, it's not raining and it's not cold, so it's in the garden for me today! Sometimes life is good!!
I spent yesterday afternoon - in the rain -piling bricks into a shopping trolley (no wheelbarrow) and lugging them up from Old Mum's garden to mine and laying them as paths between newly made veg beds. Well worth the effort as
1) they were unwanted, recycled and free (very OS) and
2) they look pretty good, if I say so myself!
Luckily Old Mum lives just round the corner so only a small selection of the neighbours got to see me soaking wet, in my gardening clothes and wellies dragging a heavy shopping trolley behind me!
Congratulations to Lauren!0 -
Strange yellow ball in the sky spotted on Hampshire/Dorset border.
Has affected chickens, all of whom have managed to get out of run and into larger garden area and are now waving at me from the river bank. (They are so stupid as their run leads to the river bank anyway so why get out and go all the way round?)
Have day off, so am sowing seeds to celebrate unaccustomed warmth - might have decent crop of veggies this summer, all being well.
Off I go before yellow ball is obscured by white fluffy things...0 -
Hi imataloss. For your curtain, you want it to be twice the width of your door (or rather, twice the width of the rail you're hanging it from. You then need to add to the width about 3" each side to turn in the edges (1 1/2" turned in and then turned in again to hide raw edges).
For the top, I usually just turn over a hem the same width as the heading tape - usually about 3". For the hem, I would allow 6" - turn it over 3 inches and then turn it over again. I also put weights in the corners as this makes it hang better. I always interline my curtains - particularly door curtains - as it makes it lovely and thick and stops the drafts. TBH, the curtain at the back door just has the interlining with the hems attached neatly and no lining at all - it was a thick fabric to start with!
If you haven't got enough fabric to have decent hems, just use what you have got! The main thing is, as you're drawing the curtain, that sometimes falls back to show the underside, so you don't want to be looking at unfinished hems. If you're not, then that's plenty good enough!!!
Thank you ChocClare - I have made lots of curtains before but not for years and I couldn`t remember how much I needed to allow for the top and the hem.
I thought about interling but the fabric is quite thick anyway. I may just make a curtain and seperate lining.
Really looking forward to getting the sewing machine out now.0 -

Good Morning All
GreyQueen, Glad to hear you managed to get some rest last night and lets hope friday brings an end to IB antics and that your new neighbours are more considerate.
It a lovely sunny day here and I would love to get out in the garden to do a bit of pottering. Im not feeling to good so its a morning on the couch before I make attempts to get showered and dressed as I have a doctors appointment this afternoon."Let your boat of life be light, pack only what you need- A homely home and simple pleasures, one or two friends worth the name, someone to love and someone who loves you, a cat, a dog, a pipe or two enough to eat, enough to wear and a little more than enough to drink, as thirst is a dangerous thing" Jerome k. Morning everyone!
Have caught up on all your wonderful posts..again! :j
ChocClare - white fluffy things have won the battle here this morning unfortunately - very chirpy weather man promised me sunshine this morning!!
Well its a quiet day here - OH and I both at work - suppose we cant spend any money when were at work.
Our lovely wee (quite big actually!) dog woke me up at 3am this morning, i clawed myself out of bed to go let her out for a pee - turned out all she wanted was a wee cuddle and off she trotted back to her bed!! How sweet - wasnt thinking that at 3am tho - bless her! Maybe she had a nightmare, :rotfl:
Having to start driving to work every day (car share at the mo but other girls going on maternity leave soon) so will also be researching cheaper cars today - our cars a bit of a fuel guzzler and has a high tax band too...hhmmmm...any suggestions anyone?
