How many sick days do you take in the average year?

  • My previous job was an office job, in 8 years service I had 2 weeks off (miscarriage) and around 5 random days for colds/flu.

My current job as a carer means if i have a slight cold I can't work incase I pass it onto the elderly people I care for. I also cannot stand the place I work for which doesn't help! So in 8 months I've had around 5/6 days off, though one was because I had to take my son to A&E.

About 8 days in nine years with my current employer, I do only work term time and 4 days per week though. I work in a college and there are loads of germs about, but I rarely catch anything. I think I am fortunate to have a good immune system.

I have the constitution of an Ox, but when I am ill i'm bedridden ill. Fortunately this means i'm only ill every 5 years for 2 to 5 days but sods law it will include a bank holiday and/or weekend.

Anyhoo last illness from work was in 2006 - 2 days, returned to work on Friday and was sent home.

    this is the thing,times change
i must have went 12+ years without a sick day
then i had my torn chest cartilage and then torn cornea not long after
theres also the issue of what job you do
if for example you work in an office then you can work through some illnesses/injuries
whereas in a physical/outdoor job its not so easy

yes things change, i hardly had days off in the past, i had colds/flu but didnt take a sickie for that as it wasnt worth it,

I haven't been off since Dec 2009 when I had 5 days for flu (proper flu where you can't even get out of bed). I think that flu must have beefed up my immune system as prior to that I used to have 1-3 days a year for a sinussy cold and I had 4 days in 2003 for a car crash. I don't think people on this thread have selective memory, just some people don't get ill very often. I have only had flu 3 times and have never (touch wood) had D&V bug, partner is similar.

I have a colleague who took at least 40 days last year, and averaged 15 a year before that - I started keeping a note just for my own curiosity because I have to cover part of her job when she's absent and thought I had spent rather a lot of time on that project. I don't think she's malingering just probably right at the other end of the scale for catching things.

In the past 5 years, I have had 27 days off sick. Three for having s & d, three for laryngitis (it was around Christmas so fewer days off sick and I was working at a call centre at the time), one for ear infection - had the following week off annual leave. Ten days for a badly bruised foot thanks to a customer driving their buggy over my foot. Then 10 days to recover from my op last year.

I only phone in sick if I am incapable of doing anything apart from being sick like the s & d etc.

I've worked for myself based at home for the past 6 years and haven't had a day off sick in all that time. I think because I don't come into contact with lots of other people I manage to by-pass a lot of the viruses etc that do the rounds.

Not that I ever had huge amounts of time off sick when I worked in an office environment either. Probably no more than 4 weeks in total in odd days over 28 years, and 1 week of that was with glandular fever.
