How many sick days do you take in the average year?

I used to work in a place where you were 'allowed' 3 instances of sick within a 13 week period before being disciplined. In effect you could have 3 separate (paid) weeks off with no comeback.
I actually saw people with calendars, consulting each other and agreeing who would take what week off within the financial quarter, (marking the calendar with different coloured highlighter pens for each person)!
the best idea in any place i worked was where the sick time cut into the xmas bonus
so you got 1 weeks pay for every year worked up to 4 weeks (used to be unlimited!,folks had over 30 years service!)
you lost 5% for every sick day
so 20 days off and no xmas bonus.
a months extra pay at xmas was a nice chunk of cash.
they later tweaked the bonus,so you also got a week in april and a week in the summer
the problem with many places like RM is theres no benefit to not going off sick
all it means is you work more weeks than someone 'working' the system0 -

No-one , and I mean no-one evers gets pulled in about the amount of time they take off sick and to be honest , there are a few who abuse it !
We get full pay when we are off sick.....
If an instance arises were we are going to be off "long term" sick , then as long as we put in sick notes (or fit notes as they are now) we will receive 6 months at our full pay rate and then after that the rate goes down to half pay for another 6 months !

I agree, where I work now, those who have lots of sick days are now worse off than those who have very little, or none. At last if your sick leave is linked to a bonus or something, surely you are less likely to go sick just because you can't be bothered.
My son's gf is a postie and I see how hard she works - and the effects on her poor knees! She says she feels like an old woman.0 -

in the place i mentioned. usually someone would have a few sick days.then at xmas,they would see everyone getting a nice bonus
so the next year they wouldnt be off sick.
as for RM,yup it takes its toll
the 1 year with no sick pay is a nightmare as well as many new starts pick up injuries in their first year.0 -
In the last 4 years I've taken 2.5 days off sick, I had an eye infection (twice). I had swine flu but was on holiday at the timeSome days you're the dog..... most days you're the tree!0

Two days in the last 12 years from memory, I seem to pick up lots of colds but thankfully seem to be pretty immune to sickness bugs.
Its not always pay based that makes people take time off, I'd get full pay but it doesnt mean I'd simply take the time off. I'm proud of my sickness reference and know that future employers would see this on my reference.0 -

would they?my past few employers do/did a simple worked for the company from X to X dates0 -

I would hardly call them the best if people blatently take the mick!The Googlewhacker referance is to Dave Gorman and not to my opinion of the search engine!
