How many sick days do you take in the average year?

Reading some of the posts from people facing disciplinaries and worse due to their absence record got me thinking about this.

While I'd never be in teh running for those certificates they gave out at school for not missing a day in 14 years I don't tend to take much time off, but by the same token don't drag myself into the office to share my illness with the rest of the company if I'm down with something.

Last day off was about 18 months ago and prob average about 0-1 day per year. It's reassuring to know that when I need time off in teh future it won't cause problems.

How about everyone else?

I was at my last job for 3 years, and during that time I took 3 days off. Felt like a complete fraud to be honest as I wanted to go back on day three, but they insisted I stayed off until I was fully fit.

Before that I was at the same place for about 14 years and took maybe 3 lots of sick days of about 2-3 days at a time.

I take as many sick days as I NEED. For 2010, about 150
  • I've been lucky to have nothing more than colds/tummy upsets. I've been in my current job just over 2 years and had 4 days off in total. 1 period of 2 days and then 2 odd days.

Until last year I had very few days off, but last year I was off work for 13 weeks, I was suffering from depression and anxiety, I am so glad that I have good employers - who have done a lot to help me get back to work with a lot of supprt,

I am currently back off work just now on compassionate leave as my mother is in a hospice and in her last few days. :(

I haven't been off ill at all in the last six years. Do feel grateful/lucky that I'm not often ill. I was granted 2 weeks compassionate leave last month when my dad died which my work didn't have to offer and I think my sickness record contributed to their decision to offer it.
Are the words 'I have a cunning plan' marching with ill-deserved confidence in the direction of this conversation?

My dad never missed a day or work through sickness until he was 60 and had a minor stroke. All the time he was in hospital, taking time off work was the only thing he was worried about.
