We get paid when we're off sick but obviously lose our enhancements which is what annoyed me most when I was off for 2 weeks after my accident - I lost 2 weeks worth of enhancements which is basically what makes my wage. I had to work 7 night shifts to make it up... thats why I try not to call in sick unless absolutely essential. Work told me to take as long as I needed after my accident and there would be no repurcussions (sp) as the accident was so serious but I went back after 2 weeks as I could no longer stand the boredom.. I still have quite serious problems now but luckily work have been quite accomodating.

  • I too think paid sick but loss of bonus is the perfect solution. If I were genuinely sick and had to take time off I would be happy to be being paid during that time when I needed it. I would accept that it fair I not receive the bonus as I had contributed less to it than those who weren't off sick. Also when I was sick others had to work harder to make up for my absence.

I have been with my employer 5 years this week and have not had any days off sick. I have been unwell but it's always occurred at weekends or when I've been on holiday - notably Xmas I often come down with something when I'm off anyway.

Prior to that I had 2 days off at my last place in 2003 so it's been 7.5 years since I had a day off sick.

There is no selective memory. I am just lucky that I don't get sick. I have my own office and I wash my hands frequently throughout the day - I don't seem (touch wood) to pick up bugs that are going around. I had a swine flu jab last year too. I got a stomach bug but it was the last day before break up for Crimbo 2009 and I managed to last the morning before we were finishing anyway.

I sometimes don't get this spreading germs thing - at what point do you decide that you've got a cold rather than a few sniffles? Surely at that point you've already spread germs around anyway.

My rule is if I don't feel well enough to work I won't work. Different people have different ideas as to what constitutes having a day off work. To me, if say you've got kids and you can get them off to school, make their tea etc. then you're well enough to be in work.
  • So far ('touch wood') I extremely rarely have a day off sick, in my current job (9 years) I dont remember having one day off. I think I must have pretty good immunity.

I agree with SandC when do you decide you would be spreading germs if you go into work? Isn't there an incubation period for colds and the like?

When I was a service engineer.. up until June 98 I hadn't had a day off sick in 14 years, when I had to go home from callout with Pleurisy.

As a system designer..in 98 smashed my arm playing football and ended up being off for three months. Spent 75% of my time out visiting sites and couldn't drive as I was in plaster from my shoulder to my fingertips for six weeks, then elbow to wrist for the next six weeks. After the first six weeks I was going stir crazy so got work to send me drawings and plans so I could do some work.

Since going back to work in September 98 I haven't had a single day off sick...(touch wood)

    now I'll probably catch something:rotfl:
  • What exactly can they do ? If employees are submitting sick notes (or fit notes) to cover their absense then what can they do?

By stopping the sick scheme its the good employees who would suffer.

If they are doing that then you have to presume they are not taking the mick, it will be the people that self certify regularly throughout the year that are more likely to be taking the mick

I take as many sick days as I NEED. For 2010, about 150

While it sounds like you had a tough time last year, I'm guessing that was out of the ordinary. An average of 150 days off over several years would be entirely different from a single instance.
