Banks work according to their own complaint procedures which give them 8 weeks to get back to you. You only have to wait that long if you intend to use the Financial Ombudsman. If you want to go down the court route, follow the timescale in Martin's article: 2 letters x 14 days each, then file a court claim.

I sent my first claim letter with the statements by recorded delivery about a month ago. I then received quite a nice letter from HSBC (almost too nice!)stating they were looking into my enquiry, though no timescale was mentioned. 14 working days have now elapsed from the date of their letter.

Are HSBC known for delaying tactics? Is it best to get on to them urgently when the 14 days are up, or give it a few more days?

    Hi Alphabass

They have upto eight weeks to reply from your first letter, so if you have waited about a month so far you should receive a reply in next month, best thing is to start chasing them around six/seventh week the fastest way is by e mail on the online banking site, normally get a response same day. You can also ring them to see what date your letter was processed onto their computer and they will e able to give you a date on when you can expect to hear from them. Be prepared to wait in long queue though.

Or you can proceed with next letter of court action, and try your luck that way, but that intends to take longer and once you have started court proceedings you will only be able to deal with their solicitors.

Have a read back through the last few weeks on this forum and your see how others have dealt with their claims. I waited the eight weeks and had offer in 7wks via me chasing them for £1,857.25 . just waiting for money to go in bank:T

    Good luck

Do you know if it is an over night transfer? ie it will show first thing in the morning and so its not worth checking for the rest of the day?

Just an update. I asked today and was told it would be loaded on overnight for the next day. I asked as I presumed that if it wasn't in by tomorrow then I would have to wait untill at least monday. Girl told me it could appear on Sat morning but at the latest it would be in by Wednesday. I can guess which day it will be!

Knowing the inconsistencies with HSBC banking practices it wouldn't surprise me in the least if you got yours first Lou!

If I'm still up at midnight I will be checking my account just to see if perhaps they have decided to pay me early. I have a feeling tho that I won't be seeing it til the end of next week
  • I very much doubt i will get it first. Im off to bed now, feel knackered today. Good luck at midnight.
