Much of the "free range" is a con anyway.
Recently on pork was the label "bred outdoors" the small print then went on to say they were brought indoors to be reared.
Can imagine a pregnant pig, about to drop, and they haul it outside, just to get the label "bred outdoors" then haul it back inside the shed again and stick it back in it's cage.
In this case surely for the poor pig it would be better to say bred indoors and raised outdoors!0 -
Bacon - our local Tesco sells them for £0.75 for 500g. Cheaper than pork!
Eggs - we buy from our local corner shop, 30 large ones for £1.80 or 30 small ones for £1.
Cheese & grapes, only buy them when they are on promotion. We did get loads of cheese and got them freezed up when Tesco mispriced them at 30 something pence per kilo:j.0 -
Just as well the UK is banning the worst excesses of factory chicken farms.
They have one thing going for them, the price.
A free range happy chicken tastes a lot better and more moist, and their eggs are more flavoursome too.0 -
I have to agree, I found these things to be expensive, when I lived alone and had very little money I very rarely bought any of them.... When you compare them by portions much can be bought cheaper.
Bacon can be found cheaper but to be honest I found I'd rather not bother with cheap bacon. Grapes were silly expensive, especially when you compare them portion wise to other fruit.
Eggs were always dear but I have to say the packs of Tesco FR 9 or 12 mixed sizes aren't that bad...
Cheese I used to not buy as an every day item for cheese sarnies etc, then I treated myself to funky cheese every once in a while.
I used to find the same of Chicken fillets, Alcohol and fish were very expensiveBump due 22nd September0 -
Iceland do 12 eggs for £1! bargain.0

I always buy cheese when it is on offer, if you search around there tend to be some pretty good deals0

I agree with 'Sparkleylime' bacon is best bought from a butchers, as i find it alot better quality(thicker slices etc) and cheaper £2.99 for 2lb, my butcher will even vacuum pack it for me. I don't buy eggs as my MIL gets 2 dozen each week from a local farm, and she always gives some to us
Grapes i only buy when they are on offer.
That's very cheap, I'll have to check my local butchers as I'll start buying mine there if it's that cheap. I notice a load of water comes off bacon these days when cooking.0
