I usually buy free range eggs, but it occured to me the other day that when I eat out, or eat something that has egg as an ingredient, I doubt it is free range at all..

Most retailers now are using free range eggs in most and some times all of their products.

Bacon and grapes are definatly a luxury in our house, but then only the OH eats Bacon so I either get the value bacon or wait for offers. (Having just joined Costco though I got 48 rashers for £3 a while ago so stocked up).

We always get red grapes but I buy the smallest bag - it's usually a treat for my two boys. I couldn't afford to buy grapes on a regular basis.

Cheese and eggs I tend to buy value too.

I'm more upset about my value ketchup jumping from 50p to 89p:eek:

I bought Sainsburys basics bacon offcuts/pieces for £1 the other day to go in a casserole. I was expecting loads of fat and rind (like Mr T's value lol) but it was really good. Hardly any rubbish, just offcuts of nice bacon. Don't know whether this is norm or if I was just lucky lol.

Much of the "free range" is a con anyway.

Recently on pork was the label "bred outdoors" the small print then went on to say they were brought indoors to be reared.

Can imagine a pregnant pig, about to drop, and they haul it outside, just to get the label "bred outdoors" then haul it back inside the shed again and stick it back in it's cage.
  • Try shopping around and watch out for offers - bacon freezes well, cheese keeps well for a long time in the fridge, so both can be bought in advance. Eggs can be bought cheaply if you are not too fussy about how they are produced, grapes (and other fruit & veg) are cheaper in Lidl and on markets. Don't know how old you are OP, but a few years spent on this site will set you in the right direction!

Grapes are seasonal, maybe right now they're expensive.
Bacon, never bought it, but Lidl/Aldi probably do it cheaper
Eggs, 10 for £1 at Aldi.
Cheese, you can always buy mature cheddar under £5/Kilo if you read the shelf labels. Tesco Value grated cheddar in a bag is probably under £4 and it's a really nice texture.

  • Grapes are outrageosly priced so I don't buy them.

Bacon - Too expensive in the shops so I only buy from the butchers where it is much cheaper and shrinks less when cooked.

Eggs - I pay £1.69 for 10 free range egge - I've always thought this was a really good price.

Cheese - Yeah it can be expensive. I buy extra when its on offer or use cheese counters and just buy small amounts.

Main thing about bacon - is what you use it for and how "pretty" you want it to look.

I always go for cooking bacon, get 5-10x as much for the same price. It's the same meat, just not quite as pretty looking in the packet.
You'll need to trim the fat off etc but you'll still be quids in and it's also less likely to be weighted up with water.

    Great for quiche etc.
