It depends what you are comparing it with. I used local butcher for meat and farm shop for eggs both cheaper than supermarket.. Fruit and veg out of season or not availible in the UK is always more expensive than in season home grown produce. I must admit I tend to use local shops rather than supermarkets too green grapes currently £1.39 a lb in my local store which i find reasonableMF aim 10th December 2020 :j:eek:MFW 2012 no86 OP 0/20000

Agree with what others have said, items which are out of season and have to be imported are subject to (high!) transport and fuel costs etc so are bound to be dearer - buy what's in season, bananas are cheap and there are deals at all the supermarkets on oranges etc, just shop around and use Mysupermarket, or use a market if you have one near you.
Cheese, at the moment there are a fair few offers the big blocks in a zip close bag are BOGOF, at Tesco its Lake District cheese, use by is March/April so last for ages. There are also always offers on at the cheese counter/deli - my Sainsburys has half price on several cheeses at any one time.
Bacon - there are offers everywhere, my hubby picked up 2 packs of Danish unsmoked for a couple of pounds at Sainsburys sunday afternoon.
Eggs - Tesco do a box of 6 for 85p I noticed, and free range I pay about 1.45 at Sainsburys - cook them fried/poached - they go further.
usual tips about checking reduced section, freezing, shopping just before closing etc will all help you, but you can find alternatives or offers everywhere if you use Mysupermarket and look what offers the kind guys on here post . Hth.0 -

The fruit and veg on offer at our weekly market is of dubious quality, and often priced around the same, or more, as the Morrison's near by, so in our case supermarket wins.We have removed your signature - please contact the forum team if you are not sure why - Forum Team0 -
Grapes - some shop usually has an offer on (co-op at the mo)
Eggs - when pushed for cash i bite the bullet and buy non free-range. Just bought 20 eggs for £1.50 in Aldi. Did feel a bit evil but they made a perfectly good omelette.
Cheese - again, there is usually one brand promoting themselves in the supermarket. Take advantage of these offers, buy in bulk and freeze it.2015 wins: Jan: Leeds Castle tickets; Feb: Kindle Fire, Years supply Ricola March: £50 Sports Direct voucher April: DSLR camera June: £500 Bingo July: £50 co-op voucher0 -
i very rarely buy grapes from a supermarket unless in whoopsies (reduced) section in asda, 3.99-4.99 per kg is prtty much the usual price, total rip off
have you got a market near you??
our local market has reasonable priced stuff but you have to take into account parking in town centre although ourse has a local tesco with 2 hr free parking which most local seem to using for going to town not tesco. best time to shop at the market seesm to be 3-4ish when they are packing up-tend to want to get rid of stuff then so reduce prices. Be careful what you buy though -bit hit and miss with quality-some stalls can have absolute tripe one week and srummy stuff and amazing prices the nextGRATITUDE WHEN GIVEN, PATIENCE WHEN DENIED

We buy aldi eggs they now do 6 medium free range 85p or large free range 6 for 99p
cheese we used to buy value mild cheddar but now buy cathedral city mature cheddar when on offer as can usually get 400gms for £2 either on £3.99 bogof or £2 at half price - we grate and freeze and if using for lunchboxes keeps sandwiches fresh as made night before
bacon husband eats it and buys value cooking bacon as likes the "bacon steaks" in it or sometimes I like streaky and can get for £1.19 in aldi
Grapes we buy when on offer and quite often are in most supermarkets0
