    In comparison to which items?

Is bacon is pricey compared to pork, reformed ham or parma ham?

What is cheese expesnive to? milk? you require 10-20 times its weight in milk to make the same amount of cheese. Then if matured this may means storage for up to 24 months (parmesan).

Bacon isnt dear, if you look hard enough you can find bacon reasonably priced
  • Free range eggs can be had for 17p each (look hard! Eg 15 in tesco)
Cheese - buy it when it's bogof - freeze it if you don't need that much
Grapes - yes they are - but they're grown abroad and flown in, consider the cost of the fuel!! Pick another fruit!
Bacon - no idea, I'm veggie!
  • Bacon and grapes are definatly a luxury in our house, but then only the OH eats Bacon so I either get the value bacon or wait for offers. (Having just joined Costco though I got 48 rashers for £3 a while ago so stocked up).

We always get red grapes but I buy the smallest bag - it's usually a treat for my two boys. I couldn't afford to buy grapes on a regular basis.

Cheese and eggs I tend to buy value too.

I'm more upset about my value ketchup jumping from 50p to 89p:eek:
    Payment a day challenge: £236.69
    Jan Shopping Challenge: £202.09/£250
    Frugal Living Challenge: £534.64/15000
  • I'm going to be the odd one out here.
We have a local foodmarket,(been there nonstop since the Victorian days) where stuff is realy cheap.
I get grapes for 2lbs for £1.20 (at their most expensive you'd pay around 90p a lb) and thats for black or green and they have such a high turnover they're always perfect.
All the other stuff mentioned is cheaper than at the supermarkets from the little deli's in there too.

Grapes: Yes, they can be. But Tesco recently had a promotion on black grapes at £2.99 a Kilo - I bought quite a lot.

Bacon: No, not if you shop around.

Cheese: Yes it often is, but there are usually special offers - if it's £5 a Kilo or less for cheddar that's a fair price. (small packs are often a rip-off.)

Eggs: I don't know as I never buy them.
I shot a vein in my neck and coughed up a Quaalude.

And barn/battery eggs are even cheaper (please remember that ethics are a luxury to some).

But all in all, these items are not much more expensive than they have ever been, just need to look out for promo's on them rather than sticking to a specific brand.

  • Grapes can def be pricey I agree with that. I realise I will prob be shot down for this but we pay about £1.60 for 15 value eggs which is only about 10p an egg. Cheese we have started to buy from the cheese counter in tesco as opposed to cathedral city etc and have got some real bargains recently, mature chedder for 35p for 100g etc. Bacon I dont buy often but it's only ever £2 a pack ish if you don't get it on offer which isn't too much and streaky bacon is cheaper!
  • Just noticed someone just posted lidl offers, cheese 400g for £1.40 - bargain!

I usually buy free range eggs, but it occured to me the other day that when I eat out, or eat something that has egg as an ingredient, I doubt it is free range at all..
