Aldi do grapes for about 1.70 for a box which i think is a good price - always best and cheapest to eat fruit and veg that is in season..
  • I have to agree with everyone else.

Cheese - it's always on offer at one of the supermarkets. I always buy it on BOGOF. It lasts for ages date wise, and can be frozen.

Eggs - I only ever buy free range. Morrisons do 15 for £2.50 most of the time (as mentioned by another poster). Tesco is most expensive for free range I find. I tend to use a local farm stall where I get 6 large free range eggs for £1.10. I noticed this week that in Tesco you can get 30 battery eggs for £3, I wouldn't buy them myself but that's cheap!

Grapes - like strawberries etc these are seasonal items so are more expensive this time of year. I only tend to buy in summer. Try Aldi/Lidl for their weekly/fortnightly offers.

Bacon - I don't buy as I'm veggie so can't help with that!

  • Totally agree about shopping around. Lidl are doing there cheddar for £1.44 this weekend. As we have a large mouse in the house (OH) I'll be stocking up. The Farmfoods bacon is good as is Asda's Smartprice bacon. £1.20 ish a pack. My son has been swapped onto apples which Lidl and Aldi do pretty reasonably. Asda also have their kids ones for £1 a bag along with clementines or the like. They're small but you get a lot and when it's for a 5 year old they're ideal. Grapes are more of a treat although Aldi's and Lidl's are fine and a lot cheaper. Check the bags if you are getting them though. The pre-packed are often better. Tesco are currently doing 2 400g blocks of cheddar for £4 and on a different note 2 x 500g packs of Lurpak Spreadable for £3 , that's £1 cheaper than any of the other current offers and cheaper than own brand.:j Remember it freezes too. Aldi also do really nice speciality cheeses for £1; Smoked cheddar, Wensleydale with Cranberries and another I can't remember. 25p cheaper than Lidl and miles cheaper than elsewhere. We had them at Christmas and they were nice.

If you are single buy large eggs - then you have six portions instead of three portions.

Tesco Value cheddar slices are 59p for 240g, around £2.50 for a kilo. Actual cheese, not processed.

Free range eggs are a luxury - essentially adding a donation to a charitable cause when you buy your eggs. Nothing wrong with that but not something you should do on a budget. Annoying thing for me is that I have to go quite far out of town to get caged eggs as we can only buy 15 at once.

  • I buy 12 free range eggs from my local butchers and they cost 1.99 which work out a little over 12p each. But they are ex-large and come from a local farmer so I find its well worth paying a bit more tesco's eggs seem to be colourless and insipid, possibly only good for making kids fairy cake with.
I like a proper egg with soldiers for my breakfast and at that price its a pretty reasonable breakfast I think.Bacon I only buy for my DGS as he adores a bacon butty.Grapes I do buy as I enjoy them not only as a fruit but chopped up in a salad as well I don't buy biscuits or shop made cakes but prefer to spend on fresh food as much as I can.I suppose its a case of you takes your choice and pays the price.

I'd do without the grapes if it meant being able to afford free range eggs instead of the other kind.

Milk prices are falling, as are cheese and other dairy products
