Main thing about bacon - is what you use it for and how "pretty" you want it to look.

I always go for cooking bacon, get 5-10x as much for the same price. It's the same meat, just not quite as pretty looking in the packet.
You'll need to trim the fat off etc but you'll still be quids in and it's also less likely to be weighted up with water.

    Great for quiche etc.

some times you get a gammon steak in there.
I let the individual decide wether that is good or bad.

Like you i use. It works well if your going to dice the bacon up etc.
Add for soups, pizza toppings etc.

not always so good for a bacon sandwich as it often on the thicker side.

If you more interested in price than the welfare in hens - Iceland do 10 eggs for £1.

If you see any blocks of cheddar in the reduced due the date - grate it and put it in a tuppaware box in the freezer.

Great for jacket potatoes, cooking etc.

It depends what you compare it with, I agree grapes are dear but if you are using the rest for a main meal (omelette, jacket pot and cheese, quiche) and compare with a ready meal then the are not expensive. As above, cheese and bacon can be frozen and eggs keep a couple of weeks at least in the fridge, so can be bought on offer - decent cheese you can usually get for £2 for 400g on offer. Eggs are between10p -30p each, not much if you had a couple instead of a meat portion (egg and chips, yum yum).

I bought Sainsburys basics bacon offcuts/pieces for £1 the other day to go in a casserole. I was expecting loads of fat and rind (like Mr T's value lol) but it was really good. Hardly any rubbish, just offcuts of nice bacon. Don't know whether this is norm or if I was just lucky lol.

I use cooking bacon a lot and tried Sainsbury for the first tiem - I was amazed by the quality! I think Asda is the worst 'value' bacon I have tried- all little bits and fat.
  • Grapes are currently being flown in from South Africa, it's not surprising they are pricey. I only get them when they are reduced.

Porkers need a lot of grain in their feed, world cereal prices are currently rocketing. Although it irks my conscience I occasionally buy 'cooking bacon' which is the best value. You don't need perfect even slices for a decent bacon buttie.

Laying hens too have a high cereal diet, see above. I get 15 free range eggs for £2 from Sainsburys.

Dairy prices have been high for ages, wait for the cheese offers, supermarkets rotate them and you can get huge blocks of catherdral city cheap. Cut these into portions, bag and freeze for later. It defrosts fine.

We have got used to having everything so cheap, we sometimes forget what it takes to get these items into the supermarkets.

And barn/battery eggs are even cheaper (please remember that ethics are a luxury to some).

It's not all about ethics for me, battery eggs taste crap on their own (fried etc).

I'd rather have fewer eggs that actually taste of something, than loads of junk eggs. :)

Back bacon can be bought around £1. (Morrisons) Even my corner shop had some that price too.

My corner shop/other locals does 6 Free Range eggs for £1.09 or roundabout.

I just buy what fruit, veg, salad is on offer 90p or £1.00

Cheddar £1.79 in Morrisons for 400g.

    There are always deals on!
