The up to date map shows no specs in that area but plenty of variable speed gatsos between J5 & J4 which is what I assume it was reporting but with an incorrect speed limit. What database are you using, the TT one is out of date to the point of being useless.

You mean the one loaded on her device is out of date, she has probably never updated it.

If the signs say 50 and have cameras, I travel at 50mph on my clock and those who are behind me who think I should travel at 55 mph, can take a running jump.

Can't say I blame you, but the ones behind you likely have a speedo that doesn't overread quite so much and think you're doing 45!

But there's another thread for that so I'll stop derailing this one now!

No, they just believe they know speedos all overread, and can't grasp that some are accurate.
  • Hi lum, what you described as road fairy seems pretty much what I encountered. Do you think given the gantry had no signs and I couldn't see any signals that there was the 70mph in place ?

I honestly never seen any round metal signs so I just kept driving at 70.

    Thanks for your advice
  • Hi there, my TT was bought a year ago. I have never updated it. I think what is bothering me more is the fact that I never seen any roadwork signs anywhere so despite seeing the yellow lights and given nothing was displayed anywhere I carried on driving under each gantry at 70mph.

Obviously with the TT beeping I was looking for signals but never seen any. Do you think it's possible to have these lights on cones flashing at 70 mph for a good mile long?

It was 3am the road was empty and I was in the middle lane passing some lorries.

A year ago there was a huge set of roadworks on the M6, due to them putting up the variable speed limit gantries. There was a permanent 50 limit in place that was enforced by camera. This is almost certainly what your TomTom was warning you about.

You have simply encountered night-time maintenance roadworks that were only on the hard shoulder. It is highly unlikely that these had a 50 limit. Frankly, there is so much paperwork and bureaucracy involved in getting a temporary 50 limit that they just don't bother for these short term night-time ones, especially since at that time of night, the bulk of traffic passing will be lorries which only do a little above 50 (and often ignore 50 limits on motorways) anyway.

    Stop worrying, you'll be fine!
  • Thanks for your advice, still worried sick though because of the Tom Tom. Just sitting hoping and praying that what you are saying is the case as I have alwAys been wary of speeding and like to stick to what the limits tell you to do.

I'm just continually questioning myself about whether there was a little metal sign sitting at the beginning of the flashing cones that I've completely missed and drove on by.

I am annoyed though if there was a speed limit and that there was nothing throughout the cones you know a little down that I would have seen because I was looking for something to tell me what to do other than gantries that were in darkness and some flashing cones.
  • If I was south bound and the lights were on the right hand side of me does that mean they were on the hard shoulder North bound? If there were speed restrictions would it have been visibly displayed as I am baffled with how I could miss this if there were that is.

For what its worth I don't think you have anything to worry about ( I know you won't stop worrying but try) You are only concerned as the TT bleeped Mine does all the time and I often wonder why as there is nothing around flashing 50 when the signs say out of the speed limit. Normaly all the way through any road work area the speed restriction is displayed. so if youy saw nothing chances are it was not a 50mph limit.
I say again chill don't worry.
