Speed signs in roadworks on motorway

Options
Travelling down the M6 today (southbound) in the roadworks section 50mph. Pottering along with everyone else doing 50.

Steel signs with 50 on them every so often but the overhead signs changed to congestion/ 40mph. Traffic slowed a bit more. Just as you pass the M5 junction the overhead signs changed to national limit it appeared the roadworks had ended but a little further on there were 50 signs again and the specs cameras.

Me and several other cars all slowed down rapidly.

Innapropriate/Misleading, Easy pickings/money maker.

Dangerous as well if causing people to suddenly break again after starting to increase speed.

I'm suprised you managed to get any speed there at all, it's a horrible stretch of road isn't it.

That stretch of the M6 between 10A and the M5 has been a nightmare since I started driving more than 20 years ago. I believe the whole stretch is nothing more than a cash generator for the government, as there must be a heck of a lot of wasted fuel due to the sudden braking and the humungus congestion.

They could have sorted it all out years ago by diverting the end of the M54, but did nothing.

The round speed limit signs, surrounded by red are the official one's, the Matrix signs are only as a guidance. I've got a bit on the road I take to work, where the speed reduces from 50mph to 30mph for a junction to a wee village and about four houses, then back to national limit of 60mph. Crazy laws and rules!!

    How?

The end of the M54 is no where near.

Think you may have gotten confused , there is a variable speed limit section between J11 and J10, from J10 to J8 there is work in progress and it's 50mph monitored by SPECS, after that, it is back to 'normal', while the specs cameras are there, best to stick to no more than 50mph (if you can attain that speed in the 1st place along there) .

I think what Barneymoon refers to is that there was supposed to be an eastern west mids bypass route which via'd shropshire and worcestershire reducing the flow of traffic between juntion 12 down to 8.

Woops I meant western bypass :o

isnt that the M6 toll? which i believe would work more effectively if it wasnt so expensive?

You can also get matrix signs with the red order circle around it - hence legally enforced limit.

    Advised.

    Legally enforced limit.

On the M25, with variable limits, very important to make the distinction otherwise it could result in 3pts/£60 fine minimum!

With regards to the OP, I suspect user error by those manning the motorway signs rather than anything genuinely sneaky.

For myself, 50mph SPECS zone = 55mph speedo indicated. Never had any issues/tickets. I've noticed on occasion the odd person speeding through at at least 70mph, thinking they must know something I don't. The number of such speeders has certainly reduced since the 'lane swap evasion method' was found to be false.

It was similar going northbound yesterday - I was driving up at about 5 pm - just after the m5/m6 interchange there were roadworks with a 50 mph temporary limit. The new variable speed limit overhead gantries first said 60mph... then went down to 40mph.
I went with the overhead signs... most other cars seemed to do the same. Will be well peed off if i get a ticket! Can't see how it would be enforceable given the conflicting signs though.
