Speed signs in roadworks on motorway

Hiya, I can't find any mention of it here, so I think it's probably just road maintenance without traffic (speed) management.

I was driving along the M6 at approx 3am on the early hours of friday morning. I came off at j2, however it happened where the variable speed location is and that is where the flashing cones were. Each time I went under a gantry the TT beeped and I kept looking for a visible road sign.
There were no warning sounds from the TT but just this flashng 50 symbol in the top left hand corner each time I went under a gantry though there were no signs. Tanks so much for trying to hep me, it is so appreciated.0 -
Hi barney's mum, does/can traffic road management have yellow flashing cones down the side? I never seen any people on the road.

If you imagine looking at a July newspaper for the weather forecast , it is not going to be up to date, it is similar to the information stored in the tomtom, a long time ago, there were SPECS speed cameras there, but they have long gone, but the tomtom does not know that, because nobody has told it the latest information, you must have noticed on your journey that there were cameras and the tomtom did not alert you to them too.0 -
Yes well funny you should say this as on route back home on Sat morning I took the M6 Toll road and when i drove under the variable speed gantry there the TT did not make any bleep which then freaked me out more. I was driving a 70mph as the gantry was not lit up and that time I had no bleeps.0

I also thought that the TT automatically updated itself when in new areas or from satelite info.
Do you think I will be ok?0 -

It depends which model you have, but only the more expensive models have a sim card inside that will allow automatic updating, however it is a subscription service so either a) you have not subscribed or b) it is not a LIVE model, sometimes you can update the database by going onto mytomtom and plugging in the device and follow the on screen prompts.0 -
Cones are required to be lit depending on where they are in a set of roadworks, what the speed limit is and if the section of road has street lights.
If they are left in place at night, they have to comply with requirements based on the above.
If you want a good bedtime read, get a copy of The Traffic Signs Regulations and General Directions 2002. This is a handy document if you are challenging any sort of driving penalty based on signs, speed limits and road markings. If they don't comply, whatever law you have broken cannot usually be applied.British Ex-pat in British Columbia!0 -
The permanent roadworks on the M6 are long gone, but the OP was driving at 3AM and thus she has likely encountered what we used to call the "cone fairy". Amusingly appropriate given the OPs username
Basically little one lane roadworks crop up on the motorway late at night, and are gone by the morning. I never bothered to look into what these are actually for, probably small maintenance tasks on roadside signs or something, however one thing I've noticed is they never set up a reduced speed limit for these since there is so little traffic that late at night that it's not really necessary and probably not worth the paperwork of setting one up.
When I used to do a lot of distance work it was not unusual to encounter 4 or 5 of these on a 5 hour run. Usually in little clusters and often around Birmingham.0 -
The up to date map shows no specs in that area but plenty of variable speed gatsos between J5 & J4 which is what I assume it was reporting but with an incorrect speed limit. What database are you using, the TT one is out of date to the point of being useless.0
