No, there was also supposed to be a bypass motorway for those wanting to continue south west :o

As the OP were.... The variable speed limit signs on the matrix were showing the national speed limit within a 50mph spec zone on the south bound between junction 9 to 8 southbound on the M6 this evening, going northbound this morning, the signs were showing 40 within the 50mph specs zone :o

Well the good news is, the SPECS is no longer valid without the metal temporary signs, and the overhead signs take precedent now biggrin.gif, spoke to the guy at the HA who gave me a reference 1310494 and in the unlikely event of a NIP there is document to say the Overhead signs are now valid. There should be an official announcment after the tidying up of the cones etc is completed thumb.gif
  • Dear all, I recently travelled down to coventry with my baby son in the back car seat and 17 yr old neice as a front passenger, when I came across the variable speed at I think J4. (I have neer driven down from scotland) There were traffic cones lit up however no signs were lit in the over head gantry, therefore I continued to drive withn the national speed limit range of 70 mph. each time I drove under an overhead gantry, the Tom Tom bleeped and 50 sign flashed up on the top left corner.

I could clearly see that each gantry was not lit up and on the bottom right hand side of the Tom Tom, there continued to be a display showing 70 mph of which I was driving within and not once over this.

I am very worried that I have gained tickets for driving under each gantry at the national speed limit. Even though, the over head gantry's were out, I can't understand why the Tom Tom made a strange bleep sound with a 50 flashing each time i drove under the gantry.

can anyone offer me some advice or reassurance as i am one very worried lady.

I'm assuming this was a HADECS (aka Managed Motorways) variable speed limit gantry that you refer to.

Depending on how old the speed camera database on your TomTom is, the warnings could have been for the cameras enforcing the 50 limit that would have been place during the roadworks that were there to put those bloody gantries up.

There is a simple rule here, it's in the manual for your TomTom, it probably also flashes up as a message every time you turn the TomTom on. Signs and road marking take precedence over the satnav. The satnav is merely a driving aid, it is not 100% accurate, it is never up to date, and you should always ignore the satnav if it's instructions contradict what the signs say, otherwise you'll end up like the idiot who drove into a river because the satnav told him to!
  • Hi thanks for this advice as I have been very worried and making myself ill over it. the Tom Tom as I explained in the last thread kept flashing 50 each time I drove under the gantry wth the pic where the black and white camera is though no speed display was showing. I guess Im worried because there was orange and white lights on the cones however the gantry did not display any speed advice.

The onlt thing I seen lit up was a display at the end of the varable speed section saying varable speed ended.

So do you think I will be ok?

I have been worried for the last few days and thtas all I can think about.

Yes when the signs on the gantries are not lit the limit is 70, and if the signs fail for any reason the cameras stop enforcing anyway.

The Tom Tom has no way of knowing what the speed limit is in a managed motorways section, as all it has is a map that someone prepared for it months ago, so even if it was up to date it would either display 70 or some indication that the limit is variable.

Didn't spot the part about there being cones before sorry. Were there any old fashioned round metal 50 signs at the side of the road at all? If not then it makes my theory, that the TomTom is warning you about a limit that was recently removed, more likely. If there were old fashioned 50 signs up then these would be valid regardless of what the gantry says (unless the gantry says lower, of course)
  • Hi...................no I didn't see anything at the side of the road thoguh it was dark and I kept staring up at the gantry. Would these old metal signs be dotted all the way along the road in between the flashing cones as these cones were a good length? As it was dark at it was 3am and I had been driving for 5 hours. I never seen any metal signs however when the tom tom bleeped as I went under each gantry I was constantly looking around for some sort of signal that told me I had to drive at a certain speed limit and I couldn't see anything. Each gantry was in complete darkness apart from at the end it had an illumminated small black and white sign saying end of varable speed. I was really confused with the bleeping and the 50 thing flashing up on the left hand side of the tom tom and then on the bottom side it was saying the road was a 70mph. I figured that due to nothing showing on the gantry that I should continue to drive at about 65 mph.

I am really worried though because of this bleeping on the tom tom.

Relax you can't do anything about it now any way. I would be very surprised if you where in a 50 from you discription, they have 14 days to send you a ticket.

Although you have not updated the database in the TT

The SCDB (speed camera database) needs to be updated on your device, indeed there are variable limits on that section of motorway, so as long as you were not speeding on that section, you have little to worry about.
