    "Car Value
Please enter the current, estimated value of your vehicle to the nearest 1,000. In the event of a total loss claim we will only pay out the market value of the car at that time. Market value is the cost of replacing your car with another of the same make and model and of a similar age and condition at the time of the accident or loss.

Only Comprehensive cover is offered for cars with a value exceeding 5,000.

If your car's value is over 50,000 please call us on 0845 246 8701."

The above is from the DL website, the website will also not allow you to enter a value more than 50k.

    What value did you enter???

You have a point there. Because of the way the OP's first post read, I thought they had arranged their policy by phone and not online.

If the OP arranged the policy online, then DL are correct. If this is the case the OP should negotiate being charged a time on risk only for days on cover with no cancellation charges and look to see if they can obtain a better quote elsewhere. Or rather do this before they speak to DL again.

  • Excuse me? You enter your details on any website and enter the car as a Mercedes Benz 2011 model CL 500.....Sorry should have said that's a £102,000.00 car.......I thought £1,600 at the time was reasonable for such a car. I have no points, one claim, in which a full recovery was made and 9 years Protected NCD.

Surely if you have the money to pay that much for a car, 3 grand for insurance be nothing to you!!

Thats not the point. If you have that sort of money, you tend to even more careful with it.

This is a case of whether the OP got it wrong if they arranged cover online or DL got it wrong if the OP arranged cover by phone.

The OP is so riddled with nonsense, (eg. like the matter being dealt with for him already by the ombudsman), can't you spot his motives for this thread?

£102k for a car. JEEZO lol. But yeah I agree...£3k isn't that much for insurance right? escpecially as someone postead above if it's above 50k you have to call them :s maybe that's what the issue was with the original claim

For that value of car, the sales person you spoke with, would have had to refer to underwriting or Team leader/Supervisor to obtain the relevant terms and probably for authorisation to put the vehicle on cover.

So they should have been extra careful with handling the quotation and it would appear that after some form of audit, they have found a mistake.

If you push this with a manager or customer relations, as long as you have provided accurate info at all times, they will cave in.

EXACTLY!!! - At the time of my initial contact with Direct Line to get a quote, he kept making me wait on the line to go back and forth and discuss it with the underwriters - and then came back with the price. That was that - £1,579.20!!!!

HUCKSTER you are absolutely right. Because of the high value of the car, it's impossible to get a quote on Direct Line's website....so yes - I had to call them up directly!!

Diretline are out of order. This is breach of contract and the FSA would frown upon what they have done.
    I am a little confused.
There was a company a year or two ago who got some of their prices wrong (I think it was Hastings). They gave their customers notice of the new premiums and my recollection was that provided they gave the notice as per the contract, then there was provision for this and it was legal.

Also don't you have to exhaust the insurers complaints procedure first before the ombudsman will get involved?
