Direct crooks not direct line!

This one takes the biscuit!
On 13th December 2010, I took out a new motor insurance policy with Direct Crooks, ahem, Direct Line to insure my new vehicle. I hereby state that ALL details given were 100% true and correct. I paid the £1,579.20 premium in full and sent them proof of my 9 years no-claims and everything seemed hunky-dory.
Nine weeks later I receive an ominous letter from Direct Line asking me to contact them about "my enquiry". There was no enquiry from my side but I decided to phone them to see what's all this about.
ARE YOU READY FOR THIS???
They told me that they're putting my car insurance premium up BY A WHOPPING £1,700.00 and increasing my excess to £2,000.00 from £500!!!!
When I yelled at the guy and asked him what the hell was he talking about, he just said, "Yes, I'm sorry, I know you've given us all the correct details, but unless you pay the extra £1,700 we WILL BE CANCELLING YOUR POLICY!"
I repeat, that all the details given to DIRECT CROOKS, ahem DIRECT LINE, at the time of taking out the policy, was 100% true and correct."
I call that extortion. Anybody had any similar experience with these cowboys? Is it legal? Surely they're in breach of contract..... Anyway, it's in the hands of the financial ombudsman now...
Cheers

Diretline are out of order. This is breach of contract and the FSA would frown upon what they have done.
Get on the phone Monday. Speak to a manager and mention Treating Customers Fairly. Advise them that you will speak to the Chief Executives office in Bromley, if they don't keep to the original terms they offered, when you had given them 100% correct information at the beggining. The comments I post are personal opinion. Always refer to official information sources before relying on internet forums. If you have a problem with any organisation, enter into their official complaints process at the earliest opportunity, as sometimes complaints have to be started within a certain time frame.0 -

Other boards too quiet for trolling were they?:p
Still it's Saturday night, managed to rope a reel a couple in eh?"One day I realised that when you are lying in your grave, it's no good saying, "I was too shy, too frightened."
Because by then you've blown your chances. That's it."0 -
I will guarantee you 100% they did not say "I know you've given us all the correct details, but unless you pay the extra £1,700 we WILL BE CANCELLING YOUR POLICY"0

So what happened after that? They must have given you a reason. There is no way they can demand an increase in payment and not even tell you why.
How did the telephone conversation end?0 -
You have 9 years no claims discount and your insurance is £3279 for the year????
What are you driving? A helicoptor?I'm a retired employment solicitor. Hopefully some of my comments might be useful, but they are only my opinion and not intended as legal advice.0
