Hubby has an old account with A & L that has seen no activity for the last 3 1/2 years. It used to be his main account until he filed for bankruptcy, but we know it hasn't been closed as they periodically send him a statement (for about £2.67 LOL).
Before he filed for bankruptcy, he did incur a lot of charges from a situation where for example, his wages would go in on a thursday...a DD would be applied for on the wednesday (day earlier) obviously, there were insufficient funds so he would get charged, £25 from what i remember. Now, it would take about 7 days for the letter to come telling him this and about 7-10 days for the charge to be applied to his account. The problem occurred when, the cashpoint was allowing him to withdraw all of his wages, without taking into account the charge that was going to be applied. Thus, he ended up being charged yet again when, knowing the DD was going out, he then left money in the account for the DD but not money for the charges. So he got stuck in a spiral.
Is it realistic to ask if he would be able to claim these charges?
Or is it not worth trying, since partly, it is his own fault?
BTW......he's discharged now, so any money would be his/ours
Thanks ( for anyone brave enough to decipher & understand my post)

I'd say it's worth a try. Nothing to lose by asking for the statements.Alliance & Leicester.

I'm in a dispute with the Alliance & Leicester over charges applied to my account.
Basically I did not have enough money in my account to pay an direct debit. Therefore they incurred a piad item charge of £25 onto my account. This made me overdrawn and I got charged another £25. I then paid money into the account, but the same happened again.
Apparently the balance shown on my Internet and phone banking was a day ahead and showed the money had transferred. But really there was still not enough money in and I got charged again.
Has anyone had this problem and successfully claimed it back?0 -
I myself am on the court stage of trying to get A&L to refund my monies. So far they have just sent me the usual snotty letters. In my case I am not actually claiming the interest or 6 years worth of charges even. I only want £100 for two D/D they put through and charged me for the privilege. I am willing to close my accounts with them, their loss as I do quite a lot of business with this bank. If more people were to close up these accounts the less money they would grab. Just a thought. Anyway, thanks to Martin and everyone's info on this site, it is invaluable and so glad I am part of it now. Will let you know if I manage to reclaim my charges. Thank you all once again.0

Hi,
I opened an Alliance & Leicester Premier Direct account approx 18 months ago. Ever since though, i have seemingly had to pull my hair out at least one every six weeks. The first problem was them losing my Direct Debit change form - the 'Account Switching Service' they are so proud of, thereby left me in limbo with a couple of payee's not getting paid on time.
However, the biggest problem appears to be when paying in. I paid into a branch £513.00 yesterday. As of 5 minutes ago, there still isnt any sign of it on my account. I phoned customer services, only to be fobbed off by the usual 5 working days waffle, and being told that cheques etc have to make their way to a central clearing centre. Now, i can send a photograph to the other side of the planet in 2 seconds, and have it in a magazine within 5 days, so how come my money dissapears into the ether for 36 hours?
The upshot of it is this: The last time A&L pulled this stunt, i exceeded my overdraft limit by £34.00, which attracted a £25.00 'paid item' fee. This i might add was for one day over the limit - they were extremely efficient at taking the money from me! I complained about this, having been egged on by these superb forums, and was straight away refunded the money. Great thought i, well till i logged on again anyway. Next surprise is they took it back again, this time disguised as 'excess overdraft fee'. Talk about sour grapes!
Pity is, there seems to be no better bank account out there at the moment - otherwise i would take great delight in voting with my feet and telling A&L what a bunch of cynical, unethical robbing gits i thnk they are!
Still, here's hoping for revenge with good old HSBC!0 -
Hi, Can you claim all the charges from A&L,i.e The full £25 paid item fee and the £34 charge for going overdrawn etc ,or do you allow the £12 i.e paid item fee £25 less £12 so you just claim the difference of £13 ?
would be gratefull for advice on this,

I have all my statements for the last six years already, should i just use these to calculate my charges or should still do the initial letter requesting the bank statements as part of the process?0 -
