hi all
firstly is anyone else having more and more problems with the A&L site being unavailble? is this the latest attempt to get bank charges by preventing those of us with only internet banking transfering funds??
secondly as regards the new £5 per month authorised overdraft fee. on the £500 overdraft A&L allow me this works out at an annual 12% interest rate. when i signed up i was told there was no interest on the overdraft for a year. However its dressed up this clearly is renaging on all those of us who signed up from this sites recomendation!!!
if im wrong on this please correct me

Right, can't believe this. Charges this month have totalled £109!!!!!
This is due to us stupidly forgetting that a DD we had changed would come out twice. Just being that £57 overdrawn has meant they have bounced one DD (£34) and put three through with insufficient funds (£25 each!). What enrages me is that them taking the charges out has caused us to be over our overdraft, so we've also incurred an additional £50 for next month in unauthorised overdraft fees.
We had a mega long conversation with them and there's no way they're budging. Don't know whether to keep trying, but this is really putting us under strain now. I'm desperately trying to get out of debt and this just isn't helping. They seem to have NO understanding of personal circumstances at all. It's really upsetting.LB Moment Sep 2007 Debt at highest £19,000 :eek:Debt at April 2011 £10,0000 -
I'm staggered by A&L, frankly: they clearly have a policy of maximising income from this stream and using any excuse not to be sensible or reasonable. It's complete nonsense to claim that the court case means they can't exercise goodwill where cases are clearly stupid. A small technical overdraft for 24 hours will cause an immediate charge of £50 minimum: it's quite ridiculous.
Sadly it seems the OFT are rolling over now and letting the banks continue. Quite shameful.0 -
Is there anything else we can do? Does anyone think that going into a branch and speaking to someone in person would help?LB Moment Sep 2007 Debt at highest £19,000 :eek:Debt at April 2011 £10,0000

I'm so angry with that bloody A&L:mad:
I've already got a reclaim in with them for £1500 which is currently 'stayed' until outcome of the test case....
I've been struggling money wise and last month put my mortgage back to interest only to help me manage, i didnt realise it wouldnt take effect until October's payment so have therefore thought i had more money that i had....i live in my overdraft and have gone over it, which is a regular occurance!
So a few of my direct debits have failed to go through and ive been charged.....it's £300 upto now....one DD was £14 and the other £25 and £35.....i'm just so mad...this is only this month's charges, last month it was £100 for the same thing.
I've rung them and explained my situation ie that im struggling and reduced my mortage to enable me to cope but they wernt interested....wouldnt listen, help or anything...
Can i do a new claim for current charges even though i have one in the pipeline or do i have to add them on to the old one????
I really need some advice here as i'm really struggling...
Thank from a very unhappy A&L customer...xx

Hi everyone,
Looking for a bit of advice about my Alliance and Leicester account.
I am looking to start reclaiming charges and will research that fully later..
What I am looking to find out is if Alliance and Leicester (or any bank) has any legal obligation to notify you of charges they are going to put on your account? When I phoned a while ago I asked to advisor this and he said that as it is an online account there would be a message in my messages section. After a while of having no internet banking access, I checked these message section and there was nothing. So no letter, and no messages. The only reason I was overdrawn in the first place was because of their £5 a month fee thing.
Is this grounds for complaint against them? Also, because I now have access to my internet banking I do not need the 6 years worth of charges letter. Can I put my first letter in straight away?
Thanks:staradmin:staradmin:staradmin:staradmin:staradmin0 -
HI there
About 12 months ago, maybe slightly longer, I had an instance where I went over my overdraft limit for all of 15 minutes (Friday), however not knowing this and a debit going in the next day, I rushed to the branch after phoning the head office and was told not to worry go in and pay some more in to cover which I did, however I was charged twice same day and this took me over my limit again, and again I was charged. Not to mention further charges at the end of the month.
I complained and got one refunded, however I was unhappy and sent them a letter to complain, I havent heard much from them and left it I was going to transfer my main banking away which I've done...
I received a letter today from them saying the review of refunding charges was in place and that they had observed my complaint still outstanding, since I thought they had resolved it (well to what degree I thought they would anyhow) what does this mean - could they re-charge those fees if it goes the other way???0 -
Hello everyone
I have recently been forced to quit my full time job which left me only with a part -time income to cover for a large amount of outgoings. Very predictable on a couple of occasions I went over my overdraft limit and a few cheques bounced. This started a chain reaction which made it possible for my bank, Alliance and Leicester, to charge me £450 (£210 IN ONE DAY) in various fees and so on during October 2007. This is actually more than my part time wages!
Because of this charges, I have fallen behind with other payments which have now severely affected my credit score. I am starting a new job on Monday, and given time, our finances will slowly go back on track and we will be able to stick to the budget. However the bank has caused us enormous inconvenience and hardship, my little boy asked to go to the Zoo on Saturday but we simply did not have £25 to do it so we had to say no and on several occasions I skipped lunch to save some money. I have been in contact with them and explained the situation but nothing was done. In my view, they are simply taking advantage of our situation in order to make outrageous profits and pay their directors millions of pounds.
In view of the current situation with the test case, can anything be done about this?
Many thanks.
