Alliance & Leicester (merged)

Remember with A&L that they take all direct debits before 9am. So if you put money in during that day, it doesn't count. Apparently even if you got there at 9am and put cash in, it wouldn't count.
other banks (eg first direct) take direct debits at the end of the day.
is that what happened at all?working on clearing the clutterDo I want the stuff or the space?0 -
Nationwide have charged me £30 because I went over by 21p0

I rang A&L today and asked politely if I could have some recent bank charges repaid as a goodwill gesture, explaining that they had been incurred due to the late payment of invoices by a charity etc etc. (Martin suggests just asking nicely if it's for bank charges incurred recently and says you can have 1 or 2 this way)
The woman said that because of the OFT guidelines, they actually *weren't allowed* to reimburse bank charges, even as a goodwill gesture, and said that it was really frustrating for them because their hands are tied, they can't do it even when they want to. I asked if A&L was party to the case and she said no but was still bound by the OFT.
The bit about not being allowed sounds like rubbish to me...? :0(

Hi all
Last month I went over my overdraft by £13 due to a payment being delayed coming into my account over the August bank holiday.
Alliance & Leicester immediately charged me £25 because of this (Paid Item Charge). Then just under 3 weeks later I got charged another £25 (Unauthorised Overdraft Charge).
I would like to get these charges back (reclaimed from other banks for myself, friends and family) but what do you guys think would be the best course of action? I only opened the account earlier this year and its never happened before so is it worth a shot ringing them and asking for the charges back as a gesture of goodwill or should I send a letter and go with the standard reclaiming route?
Thanks for your help

Hi Anthony,
For the cost of a phone call it's definitely worth giving them a ring, what harm can it do, as it's the first time you might get a little bit of help from them, as it is at their discretion to refund the charges.
Good Luck

Thanks Mark. I thought I'd give it a go and call them but was seeing if others had had any luck with this on first time offences.

Hi,
I noticed this a.m. that despite moving £50 from my PlusSaver account into my current account yesterday to cover some charges that were due to come out yesterday that A&L had charged me a £25 "Paid Item" charge. Had I not paid the £50 in I would have exceeded my overdraft limit by £1.67.
Incidentally on the bank statement printed off this a.m. the running total has not exceeded the overdraft limit. When I rang A&L I was told that I would not have the £25 refunded, pending a case in the High Court. I reasoned with the person on the other end of the phone that a) the charge of £25 was unreasonable for the paltry amount of £1.67, and b) that the running limit of the account never exceeded the overdraft limit, but, she was resolute and told me that the charge would 100% not be refunded pending the outcome of the case in the High Court re. reclamation of bank charges.
Has anybody had a similar discussion with A&L, and can anyone advise me what I should do next?
I already have a couple of other current accounts available to me should I decide to switch account; although switching account and closing the A&L one would be kissing my £25 goodbye.Cheers,

Well i'm claimting back £1177 from my Alliance and Leicester Credit Card, i sent letter one and got back a letter saying the usual guff but as a valued customer they would give me back £168 (how kind)...
I sent letter 2 saying that i would without prejudice accept that as part payment blah de blah de blah....
I also added that the minimum they should have offered was £288 which was the difference between the £12 maximum that the OFT agreed as a maximum and what i'd actually been charged....I then put that due to these being credit card charges any attempt to stay the case would not be appropriate and finally i added that i looked forward to seeing them in court where i would ask them in front the judge to disclose the actual cost to them of me paying late or going over my limit...
Well today i got the same letter as the first one back with the same guff and as i am a valued customer they would arrange for a further £360 to be credited to my account.
I wonder what a 3rd letter will bring me?0
