  • In April we applied to get our bank charges back ,but everything was put on hold.We have since incurred alot of charges and was wondering if I should update my application to the Alliance-Leicester.
  • I'm so upset here I could just cry...

I've posted before about the charges A + L have put on my account but heres some background..

    13th Feb - July - account dormant, overdraft limit at £250, balance - £239

July/August - Alliance whack on £15 underfunding fees taking balance to £-254.59

No letter received by me at this point

I receive letter in August, pay in £75.00 bringing balance to £-179

    Charges then follow like this:

6th Sep Unauthorised Overdraft Charge £25.00<O:p</O:p
    Charge 21st July-20 Aug Day 1 <O:p</O:p

6th Sep Unauthorised Overdraft Charge £25.00<O:p</O:p
    Charge 21st July-20 August Day 5 <O:p</O:p

8th Oct Unauthorised Overdraft Charge £25.00<O:p</O:p
    Charge 21st August-20th Sep Day 1<O:p</O:p

8th Oct Unauthorised Overdraft Charge £25.00<O:p</O:p
    Charge 21st August-20th Sep Day 5<O:p</O:p

    PAY £290 INTO ACCOUNT - balance £0.06</O:p

5th Nov Unauthorised Overdraft Charge £25.00<O:p</O:p
    Charge 21st Sep-19th Oct Day 1 <O:p</O:p

5th Nov Unauthorised Overdraft Charge £25.00<O:p</O:p
    Charge 21st Sep-19th Oct Day 5

17th Nov Unauthorised Overdraft Charge £25.00<O:p</O:p
    Charge 20th October – 31st October Day 1 <O:p</O:p

17th Nov Unauthorised Overdraft Charge £25.00<O:p</O:p
    Charge 20th October – 31st October Day 5

so theyve charged me £200 for the fact they put me in overdraft by £4 in the first place. The only letters I have received from them was one to say I was overdrawn by £4 and the other just recently to say I must pay money in. None to tell me these underfunding fees would go on.

Ive called them and theyve given me the usual, we cant refund business.. I just cant beleive £200 for being £4 overdrawn, its unbeleivable... !

Have also downgraded account to one that has no underfunding fee

Sorry, I'm really lost...when did you go overdrawn by £4? Was your £250 o/d withdrawn? Were you told that you must pay £75 in? Surely the balance would be -£174 then, not -£179?

    £3,500 @ 0% with Bank of Scotland - pay off before 05/02/10
:staradmin£700 @ 3.9% with M&S - pay off whenever as the rate's for life :staradmin
  • Hi

It went overdrawn by £4 in August, sorry I should have put they actually put on £15 of 'underfunding fees' bring it to -£254, I will amend. The overdraft limit is £250, yes. The advisor told me to pay £75.00 as that would cover the £50 charges due to go on and the £15 underfunding fees and give me a £10 lee-way for the moment.

    I too am livid with A & L.

I opened a Premier Direct account as a savings account last year but my circumstances changed this year I know longer had the income to pay in £500 per month. The only effect I understood this to have was that I would no longer have the overdraft facility that came with the account. Because of this I have largely forgotten the account even existed as I had withdrawn all but £10 of my money (so I was still £10 in the black).

I've just logged in today to remind myself of how much cash was in there still and found to my disgust that I have been charged £5 per month (ok - not that much but I'm right on the margins at the moment and can really do without this) for the last 7 months as an "underfunding fee".

As someone who has never really had financial issues in the past I haven't incurred any bank charges before, so I'm not familiar with the nature of the charges that MSE has been reclaiming over the past 18 months or so, but surely this underfunding fee is a complete crock - whether it was in the fine print of the terms and conditions or not.

I can totally empathise with you Stacey21. I don't know if you had previous knowledge of the fees Stacey, but surely these can't be fair.
I am a cider drinker - like my father before me.
  • The underfunding fees I am fine with, it's the fact that they put on 3 months of charges over the two months which surely they would have known would take me overdrawn. I received no letter to say 'You haven't been funding this account accordingly...we will now start to charge.. bla bla bla'. At least then I would have known and could have paid money in.

As it stands, Alliance and Leicester gave me 'credit' of £239, but I now have to pay back around £479 - what kind of percentage is that in loan terms??!!

Like most people we have been stung many times for going as little as 12p overdrawn. However we have watched and waited to claim these charges back. Now it seems that because of the test case we cannot claim from the Alliance and Leicester because they signed a waiver - is this true?? We have an overdraft of about £950 (a guestimate is that this is the amount we have been charged over the years - funny that!!) and we were worried they would ask us to pay this back if we claimed! Anyway - having read some of the threads it appears some people are still claiming even though their banks have signed this waiver. What are our chances - I want to clear this blooming overdraft!!

    Hi oohgreta,
you can still get your claim registered onto the court system, but the likely outcome is that it will automatically be granted a stay until the outcome of the OFT "test case". We had our 2 claims automatically stayed at St Helens County Court, received the letters today, saying that the stay would be in place until the outcome of the OFT case or the 31st of March whichever came first.

    Hope this helps

  • Dear laura as I understand from reading advice on this site you now report them to the information commissioner
  • I'm having major issues with A&L too- Around £250 in bank charges accrued mainly from one instance where I went overdrawn and was unable to pay a direct debit.

Then, A+L dropped their under 21 bank account and wrote a letter to me informing me i either needed to call and let them know I wanted to change to the Premier 21 account (basically the same thing!!) or it would default to their normal bank account.

So I called them and they assured me that it had changed... but lo and behold, the month after, I get a letter informing me I have interest charges to pay cause I now have a standard bank account with them.

Alliance and Leciester are the most appalling bank I have had the misfortune of banking with, and I can't wait to see them in court...
