Can AVG be used alongside any of the other free Anti-Virus, like Avast?

Or can I only use one AV program?

Before installing AVG you must uninstall any other AV program. If you don't you may not be able to load AVG satisfactorily.

  • I use Avast, I advise everyone to use Avast and have never heard of problems with it.

Terrible statement ? Well excuse me for not saying Norton ANTI-VIRUS , I assumed you would know what I meant . Go ahead and pay £50 for it . Or maybe pay nothing for the better AVG . Hmmmm . Hard choice .

To your question, the answer is yes. It is a difference maker as to what programme you're talking about.
When you assume things you can't get annoyed that your exact point didn't get across.
Try being more precise then there will be less room for debate.
Smugness is unbecoming. Especially when it is unjustified.
    Good arguement:confused:
    P.s. NAV doesn't cost £50.

But if you look at the update on this site it suggests that Kaspersky isn't a full antivirus suite.

Also if you look at the comments on Heuristics which are an important component of an antivirus program, Kaspersky isn't mentioned. AVG rank highly.

At the end of the day it's down to personal choice I guess.

  • A bunch of figures without any context is basically worthless. Here's a bit of help for anyone who's stumped by all those numbers. The two set of figures are for viruses detected (out of some 140000). Post 45 is for number of viruses detected by heuristics alone, post 47 is for pecentage of viruses detected (the site doesn't make it explicitly clear if this includes heuristic scanning, but I imagine it does).

What does all that mean? Being quite honest, not a lot. What you need to know is "Will my AV pick up the viruses I encounter?", and neither test can actually tell you that. I'm more interested in heuristic scanning as that has the capability of picking up new varients of existing viruses easily, and has some capacity for finding entirely novel viruses. It's the new viruses that are a real worry as they can spread before the AV vendors create and push out a solution.

Basically take all those figures with a pinch of salt, unless your AV is right at the bottom of the table. As it happens those that are don't even claim to be AV packages, so why is this site including them in the test?

<cynical>If I were an AV vendor I'd create a whole load of new viruses, detect them and claim that my detection rate's the highest.</cynical>

As an aside I would not advocate taking advice from any site that thinks it's cool to collect computer viruses...
  • To avoid this turning into some sort of religeious AV war (which doesn't belong here, and I *did* try to refer this to the Techie forum) can we agree that:

    * AVG isn't being dicontinued.
    * All the major AV packages are at least fairly effective at detecting viruses. This includes various free packages such as AVG, Kapersky and so on.
    * Full security suites (such as Norton's) can be very bloated and a right royal pain.
    * You don't need to pay for a good AV solution.

Lastly, please remember that virus outbreaks can still affect your PC even with AV software as virus updates aren't always released in time. This means you *do* still have to be careful about opening attachments and downloading software (including screensavers) from the web.
