Free AVG anti virus to be discountinued

Compared to the big guns like McAffee and Norton, AVG proudly wins the race by miles. McAffee and Norton are better suited for a business environment but for home use, anti virus softwares like AVG, Avast and Kaspersky do a much better job. Norton and McAffee Anti Virus are extremely Memory intensive and the definitions updates are on average 3 to 4 MB in size. AVG on the other hand is a very light AV and the definitions update on average 175KB...which makes it much more appealing. I personally use AVG since last year and am 100% absolutely happy with it and I will definitely download and install the latest version.

Norton made my computer grind to a halt. AVG > Norton.

this made me laugh

when i changed from AVG to Norton AV, Nortons's found "viruses" so i thought i had made a good choice in new software.

months later and after issues with NAV i swapped back to AVG and sure enough AVG found "viruses".

now i must say, i strongley believe these software companies make sure their software WILL find something dodgy during the 1st full system scan, it makes their software look superior and you're sure to tell your friends!!

I am using the firewall that is part of windows xp. Are you saying that these are better,work better or is the microsoft firewall ok. Should I change?
I use Avast my friend uses AVG neither of us has had any problems.
Would like to know how to disable updates on AVG? Do you then manually update?

Windows Xp firewall is not much use at all as it does not block outgoing traffic, which is what happens if something is trying to send all your details off on the internet !!

I always scan computer magazines whenever they put free / chargeable anti-virus software to test. Used AVG for years, given up on Mcaffee and Norton (AV of course!).

AVG invariably has won hands-down on all the tests and reviews that I have seen. A new version, an improvement I assume, should be even better.?

The new version, 7.5.430 is compatable with Vista.

Zonealarm firewall also excellent - I wouldnt trust Windows firewall on its own for the reasons other people just posted.

My personal set up is

AVG free
Zonealarm free
Spybot Search and Destroy
Adaware (doesnt seem to conflict with Spybot, nor spybot with adaware)
Spyware blaster - to stop spyware getting on the pc in the 1st place

Been using this combination last 4-5 years and its kept the pc clean as a whistle and not memory intensive at all.

Can AVG be used alongside any of the other free Anti-Virus, like Avast?

Or can I only use one AV program?
