madnis7 wrote:This is wrong and a terrible statement. Firstly Norton is the company name not a product name. If you are referring to Norton Anti-virus it does not take over your whole system, it simply does what it says, it provides Aint-virus protection. I believe the program you are referring to is System Doctor and yes it does drain your system. However it has nothing to do with the anti virus soft ware.
As a side i had AVG for a year and when i scanned it with AVG anti-virus software it showed nothing however after a major problem i was recommended Norton Anti-virus by a friend and it discover and disposed of 7 viruses. But that is my personal experience.
Terrible statement ? Well excuse me for not saying Norton ANTI-VIRUS , I assumed you would know what I meant . Go ahead and pay £50 for it . Or maybe pay nothing for the better AVG . Hmmmm . Hard choice .0 -
It's all about personal choice.
Personally I hate Norton - versions 2003, 2004 and 2005 all broke my PC at some point (forcing me to reinstall Windows - because the damn thing won't uninstall!).
I too found Norton to be a resource hog - although reviews of 2007 say it's better.
I've been using AVG recently and love it, especially once I found the option to stop it popping up with it's auto updating.0 -
My Norton free-trial with my new PC has just expired and I was thinking of getting AVG as although I've always had Norton since my first PC 9 years ago I think it's a tad on the expensive side (even when I buy it through cheapest sources).
Do I need a (Zonealarm?) firewall to use in conjunction or does it include 1?0 -
You'll need a firewall. Windows XP has one built in but for maximum protection you'll need something like zonealarm or outpost0

Or you could try sygate personal firewall, its free for personal use and 30 day trial for business users.

As pointed out, AVG free is not ending, it is being updated and you need to a fresh download to be able to use it.

New Free Anti-Virus
GRISOFT is announcing a new version of the AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition. This new 7.5 version with improved performance and full compatibility with the latest Windows Vista version is available. Users that are using AVG Free 7.1 will be provided with a specific dialog, within the next few weeks, with the opportunity to choose the right option fulfilling their needs. AVG Free 7.1 version will be discontinued on 15th of Jan 2007.
......As far as I can see, there will still be a free AVG - just a different version0 -

If I already have a firewall set up through my router & AVG, is that enough?
I currently have 3 month trial on a new laptop through Norton, and would like to have AVG ready to go ASAP, will they get along together?
ONE antivirus-one firewall see below.
