Because I don't freaking do business in Scotland. You seem to know all the answers, why not let us all into the secret.

All I'm saying that they seem to cope OK in Scotland, so they must have an answer to this problem..

So what is so difficult about erecting a boom with card access control. It wouldn't cost much and would keep any unauthorised cars out.

Or is it the loss of profit from the clamping that is the real problem?

Because they cost upwards of fifty thousand pounds to install. Notwithstanding not being able to get permission to install them.

Profit, from clamping? It's not the landowners/occupiers who make the profit, but they are the ones who are expected to carry the costs.
The greater danger, for most of us, lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low and achieving our mark

What about a simple drop-down lockable post in front of each parking spot. They are not expensive. There is always expense involved in securing property. Be it fences, CCTV, External lighting, doors or windows. So what's different about a few bollards?

You'd be surprised at how much these things do cost, and how awkward it makes things for visitors and delivery drivers.

We don't get anything from the clamping company and to date they haven't had anything yet as the signs are working and no-one has been clamped. Once the law changes, the !!!!!!!!!!s will know they can park with impunity, and they'll be back in their droves.

Clamping is a cheap, effective and unobtrusive solution to preventing inconsiderate motorists from blocking private land with their vehicles. Yes, there are other solutions, and we will be forced to implement one or more of them despite the many drawbacks.

You have a low opinion of your fellow citizens.
  • SO whats the difference between councils doing the clamping on public land and private firms doing clamping on private land?

I just can't see this possible new law surviving as it is.

With the council, the law allows clamping. With private companies the new law will ban them from doing it. That's the difference.

    1. Do you have clampers already employed?

    Yes, see my first message.
What is the precise wording of the signs do you have up? A patronising templated sign barking orders and hollow threats is likely to be ignored.

Our signs said something along the lines of, "Private Property. No unauthorised parking", which seems pretty clear to me. The new ones were supplied by the clamping company, and I'd have to wander out and read one, but the combination of wording and a big picture of a clamp is doing the job nicely.

If the clamping ban goes ahead, what signs do you think we should put up? Do you really think they'd work?
