OK chaps and chapesses - my results on the cook and slice your own ham trial.
After cooking and removing excess fat, I think I had about 700g of ham, which I sliced into varying thicknesses.
Cost - £5.96 plus honey on top plus cooking costs (negligible)
Now, whilst this appears to compare with the pre-packed ham in Tesco's (not counting the value stuff), the quality is far superior. I would like to have bought the decent stuff, but couldn't afford it. So, having looked at the pre-packed prices of 'decent' ham, I reckon to have saved £8. TBH, I'm pleased only because for the same price as I was paying, I now know I'm not eating all the additives and extra water the cheaper stuff is packed with.
The next money saving thing is to buy from a butcher so that I get the joint cheaper and with less fat on. My search continues....0 -
Well done, tm - sounds like a success story to me!~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Does anyone have this
http://www.argos.co.uk/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Search?storeId=10001&catalogId=10651&langId=-1&searchTerms=food+slicer
And if so do you find it useful. I am so bad at slicing bread/cold meats etc. Do you think it would be a good buy?
Many Thanks for your help0 -
we bought a one very similar in netto not so long ago £10 its ideal for cutting cooked meats never tried bread, the only downfall i find its a pain to clean as little bits get in all the cracks:eek: and you cant just literally dunk it in water,0

Hi angie,
I have a food slicer that looks very similar to the one in your link and I love it. I use it mainly for slicing bread because no matter which knife I used I could never get two slices the same and it's great for thinly slicing meat for sandwiches. As barjam has said it can be a pain to clean but the blade comes out for washing and I use a brush to get the crumbs out of the nooks and crannys before giving it a wipe over with a damp cloth.

I'll merge your thread with that one later to keep all the replies together.

I bought one similar to this about 4 years ago on recommendation from my mum. I wouldn't be without it, especially at xmas, it's amazing how far you can make a small joint stretch! If you’re British in the living room, what are you in the bathroom? European!0 -
