Make sure they aren't in a plastic bag, put them in a basket or something, with a newspaper on top of them and put them in a dark cupboard, under the stairs maybe? They'll keep for quite a while then. how long are you away?
  • I'm only away for 2 weeks so perhaps they'll be ok then

I want to make frozen chips now - does anybody have any ideas on the best way of freezing them?
The early bird gets the worm but the second mouse gets the cheese
  • I only know how to make Mashed potato, roast potatoes and boiled potatoes... we don't do 'proper' chips in our house because we only use oven chips.. but was wondering what else you can do with the humble potato? I'm not very good in the kitchen and my skills are rather limited.. lol.

One of the easiest things you could do is cheese and potato pie seing as you can make mash, once the mash is made simply grate some cheese and stir into the potato {prefereably whilst it is still hot} you can vary the flavour by adding some mayonaise, chilli, pepper, oregano, or mixed herbs for example, simply experiment with the ingredients you have to hand, once mixed pop it in the oven for 20 mins or so to brown on the top, try using it as a topping for example baked beans, or chilli beans are ideal.
Four guns yet only one trigger prepare for a volley.

Together we can make a difference.
  • :) Homemade oven chips/cubes - chip or dice, toss in olive oil, add salt, pepper and other flavourings - crushed garlic/rosemary/thyme/pizza seasonings/chilli.
Place on a baking tray and bake in a hot oven 200c for about half an hour.

Pommes de terre Dauphinois - slice really thinly (food processor is good for this).Place in a baking dish which you have buttered and rubbed with a clove of garlic. Season with salt and pepper between layers, pour over cream and dot with butter. Bake in alow oven for a couple of hours.

Pommes de terre boulangere - as for Dauphinois but with stock instead of cream.

Hasselback potatoes (Swedish dish) - You need oval spuds about the size of an egg for this. Place each scrubbed but unpeeled spud in the bowl of a wooden spoon. Slice the potato across at intervals about 2 mm wide to make cuts that almost go through the potato but not quite (the bowl of the spoon should prevent you cutting right through). Have ready a roasting tin with butter and oil in that has been getting nice and hot in the oven (about 200c).Carefully place the spuds in the tin turning to coat with fat. Bake for at least 45 mins - may take longer. They look a bit like hedghogs when done.

Think I might do hasselback spuds with my roast chicken- saves peeling ;)

Or make shepherds or cumberland pie :p I'm getting hungry again!

I also loved stuffed jackets. Cook the jackets, cut in half, scoop out the insides and mash up with cheese and cooked mushrooms (or ham or whatever) put back in the oven and cook for another 20 mins....lovely!

Homemade wedges are the best, wash tats, cut them into 4 then i cut them again, place on baking tray or similar and drizzle a couple of spoons of oil over, season with whatever takes your fancy and cook for about 30 mins.
If everyone cared and nobody cried, if everyone loved and nobody lied, if everyone shared and swallowed their pride then we'd see the day when nobody died.

Make veg soup with carrots, onion, lentils (optional), stock, and anything else suitable that you have around. Adding potatoes cut into medium sized pieces helps the soup to thicken, and gives it body. You can freeze quantities of home made soup - someone recently suggested using pint milk cartons, which is a great idea - for use whenever you want a quick snack, or stir in grated cheese and serve with crusty bread for a more substantial meal.
    :D I haven't bogged off yet, and I ain't no babe :D
