I agree with pink-winged. I always use Delia's recipe for dauphinois from her Complete Cookery Course and it's brilliant. IMO onions and cheese actually detract from the taste of this dish.

We make what my Mum always called scalloped potatoes and which is a good way to tidy out the fridge!!! Peel and slice the potatoes thinly and then layer in a casserole dish with a selection of:
    onion, sliced
    tomato
    mushrooms
    garlic
    ham
    bacon
    any other cold meat
    hard boiled egg
    cheese
    leftover cooked veg
Between each layer of potato, season well, sprinkle with a dsp of plain flour and dab with bits of butter or marg. End with a layer of potato and then pour in milk (or milk and stock mixed or milk and cream) to just below the top layer of potato. Cover and bake at 150 for about 2 1/2 hrs. This is a good "end of month" dish.

    Hi

Not a recipe as such but I buy Tesco Value potato's as well and find they are excellent value indeed. Last for ages and nice size ones for baking.

God that sounds really sad I do have a life really and am not just a spud spotter :rotfl:

    Hi tracey,

There's an older thread with lots of ideas that should help so I've merged your post with that to keep all the suggestions together.

Apologies if this has been asked before but...

I grew lots of potatoes on the allotment this year (nothing else grew in the wet, miserable summer we had  ) and now have loads and loads of lovely HGrown spuds !

The thing is, whilst I love eating them, I do get fed up preparing them as they take up a lot of time and with 3 children, time is precious !!! So does anyone have any ideas for potatoes so I can prepare a load in one day that can be stretched out over lots of meals ?

Also, any good recipes please ? :)

Does that make sense ?

    Hi

I do a big pan of boiled spuds and then we have boiled or mash one day and then fried potatoes or bubble and squeek the next (they would probably also last another day). I believe that you can freeze jacket spuds so you could cook a load next time the oven is on and then just get them out as you need them.

    Hi frugal,

I bulk cook roast potatoes in batches and then freeze them in family sized portions. I cook them less than I normally would...until they're just beginning to colour then cool quickly and freeze. When I want to use them I take them straight from the freezer and give them 20-25 minutes in a hot oven to crisp them up again. I have tried defrosting them first but I think they're crispier if reheated from frozen.

I've never tried it but according to other posters you can bulk cook and freeze mash in portions too.

These older threads may give you some more ideas for interesting potato dishes:

  • I often steam spuds (which in itself is quite easy - the steamer's on a timer and you just leave it to it)

left overs get fried, potato salad, in a tortilla. Yesterday I chucked them them in a cauliflower cheese.

(My OH is a potato maniac and usually eats 3 times what a normal person would eat. I find it really hard to gauge how much! And once in a while he eats the same as me and I've got loads of leftovers!)
