Can I join you? I am one of the TTC 'graduates'

Got a digi BFP on Sunday & still in shock! This is my first & had been trying since April/May last year when came of depo - but not truely trying until September when AF came back with a vengence after 8 years!

Going to doc's on Friday for first appointment (although receptionist thinks it is pointless until 8 weeks & even tried to give me the midwives number to book my own appointment  she obviously doesn't read the NHS website!) I want to ask about carrying on with slimming world etc.

Yea I did this with my first thinking I needed to inform the gp and he was kind of like, oh right ok, make sure you take folic acid and here's the midwives number...

If you want advice you may actually be better ringing the midwives, IME GPs tend not to be as knowledgable when it comes to pg related stuff.
  • i feel dreadful today. being sick in my car (in a bag) is definatly not a good way to start my day. i dont get sick pay so i have to come to work (because i've had too much time off) but i just feel absolutely horrid :(

  • Morning lovelies - I am so pleased to see I am good company with a few other "old birds" .... when I go to clinic/mat unit all the other expectant mothers look so young and I feel like an old crone!

Can't remember who it was that said about Slimming World but I have been going for a year and my Doc said at my first appointment that it was fine to continue so long as it was a healthy eating plan rather than calorie controlled which it is. My SW Consultant gave me a form for my midwife to fill in and sign at each appointment which states that the MWs are happy for you to continue at SW and give an indication of targets - eg to put on not more than 4lb between appointments. My MW read everything thoroughly at booking appointment and said that they had been told that SW was one of the few that was recommended through pregnancy. They want to keep an eye on my weight for gestational diabetes as I am an older mother, BMI is 30 and my last baby was 9lb (1st was 7lb4.5oz).... if we go for another 1lb 11oz increase in baby weight it's not even worth thinking about.... the best part of an 11lb baby!

ETA - you get and extra HEA & HEB when you're pregnant, though my current craving of marmite toast, jelly beans and crunchy nut cornflakes are not on plan

You don't need to see the dr. They don't do anything other than as was said above give you the number to book with the midwife. They don't do BP or their own test or anything so it is a waste of your and their time really. Ours won't even prescribe folic acid you are told to go buy it, though a good pharmacist will do you it on the minor ailments if you ask nicely ;). Unless you have other queries you may as well cancel it. Ours won't even see you, they just refuse.

Slimming World and Weightwatchers both have a different programme you follow during the first few months of pregnancy, speak to your group leader, gp's know nothing about it.

    Congrats xx

But the NHS website says to see your GP to make contact

This is the annoying thing as if i didn't have access to dr google, i wouldn't know what to do or when to go for appointments etc. It's not something that gets discussed - so how are you supposed to know what to do?

My BMI is quite high & my mum is trying to wrap me in cotton wool saying i shouldn't be doing Zumba etc. so i just want to make sure that i can carry on as 'normal' :o so i can tell my mum so she can stop worrying!

I think some of her worrying is rubbing off

ETA: spoken to slimming world consultant (she's a friend) and got some info - so i'm good to go!

    Hi all,
I was also told it'd be pointless to see my GP. I'm not in with the mw until Feb 21st. Going off my lmp date, I'll be nearly 9 weeks by then!

Is it worth ringing and explaining that? She initially said they want to see me at 7 weeks, but my dates are confusing me (cos I had 34 day cycles). I'm either 4+4 and nearly 8 weeks when I see the MW, or 5+4 and nearly 9 weeks if I go off the LMP date.

Which dates would you use???? I'm so confused!

Still no real symptoms here, apart from an upset-feeling tummy. I'm finding it really hard to believe and keep worrying about it not being real!!

Nessie - With my doctors, you just go in to reception and fill out a form for the midwives, who then contact you directly. Your booking in appointment is usually between week 8-12. They really don't do all that much in the first few weeks - even tho this is probably when you are most anxious and most excited about it all.

My zumba teacher told me that its like any form of exercise, in that if you feel dizzy or faint then slow down or take more breaks. But, in my zumba class theres so much hip swivelling etc that I just wouldn't want to do it. Other people have said there can be a risk of early miscarriage with zumba and to me its just not worth it. I've been following a healthy eating plan which I plan to continue and I will swap zumba to swimming or walking which are gentler forms of exercise. They do say that you shouldn't start new exercises, but if for example you are used to running 8 miles - then there is no reason why you couldn't continue to do this whilst pregnant. Its a personal choice tho in my opinion and you have to feel comfortable with whatever decision you choose. In a week or 2 I imagine the imense tiredness that will wash over you will make your decision for you with regards exercising ;)

Nic - The midwives/doctors will always go on LMP date until your scan. Then they will measure the baby and give you a new due date if they need to move the dates around. I always have in my head my actual dates tho (I have long cycles too) so that I don't accidently think I am further ahead than I am.

The most common early signs are not much really. You can get constipated / have more wind as the digestive system slows down. You can get cramps in yr tummy which is due to the ligaments in your womb stretching. You can get sore boobs. Tiredness sets in and you will need to sleep/rest more. If you do get morning sickness - it usually starts around the 6 weeks mark. Eating little and often helps to keep that at bay (well, sometimes it helps, not always :o). If you got a +ve HPT then you aren't imagining it ;)

Nessie when I was pregnant I did see the dr- because thats how it worked in my area (it also worked differently where I am in that you booked your scan yourself whereas lots of ladies get told in a letter with no choice of time etc). You couldnt see the midwife until you had seen them - however, all she did was take my blood pressure and tell me the stuff I should and shouldnt eat and asked for my LMP. Then told me the midwife would contact me. They will then tell you what appts you need to go to.

So if your dr is referring you to the midwife just do that. The dr really wont tell you anything you cant find out already in regards to what you can and cant do.
