ha ha lozzy - perhaps you look like the 'secret smoker' type
It's probably just a standard thing in your NHS area, I certainly didn't need to do it at my book-in and didn't see anything that even looked like a breathalyser. On the other hand I was tested for sickle cell anemia even though my ethnicity would make that very rare....0 -
2b - plenty of ladies seem to have something similar but if you're worried why not give the mw a ring?
Funnily enough, I have up smoking a few years ago and haven't missed it at all for the last year. But in the last few weeks I'd have loved a sneaky fag. Think I may have been more stressed about being pg than I thought!!

Right, on Saturday I'm going to have to bite the bullet and buy some maternity clothes. Scan is on tuesday so I know it's tempting fate a bit but it's the last chance I have to go shopping till Oct. I'm off to MK - anyone got any good suggestions of clothes for size 14 (to buy as one sixe up from normal for next few weeks that I can wear on the way down too) and for maternity stuff. Without sounding snobby I quite like nice clothes - I reckon I've matured out of New Look and Topshop - but maybe you ladies could suggest differently.0 -
My best mate has had 2 kids and bought maternity basics (tops, jeans etc) from Next and Dotty Ps, then a few nicer dresses etc from Debenhams. I can't wait until I can go do that!!
ETA: where do you normally shop? Most places have a maternity section now I think.0 -
I know this is a bit depressing, but does anyone actually know the stats on missed miscarriage? For some reason I've got it in my head that its a big thing to worry about, but maybe that's because there is a bias in the people who post on internet forums; ie that they are more likely to be the people who have had past problems.
I mentioned it to the midwife yesterday and she looked at me like I was a bit mental. She said that's absolutely the worst case scenario and is incredibly rare. I have no risk factors for mc at all, and she talked very much like it was a 'given' that the baby would be fine. Have other people found this too? Or is it a tactic to stop us worrying so much? I am normally so pragmatic about things... feeling a bit flaky isn't something I like in myself.0 -

) and so are bottoms.
Some of my pre-pregnancy tops fit fine (if they are jersey-type fabric, they just stretch, provided they are long enough); if I went up a size they'd be all baggy around my shoulders.
I'm most definitely on maternity bottoms though, unless I combine my pre-pregnancy bottoms with a bump band (mine's from JoJo Maman Bebe) except for one pair of slightly stretchy trousers which always sat very low on my hips.
I bought some maternity stuff online from Debenhams (Red Herring) in their sale, and have treated myself to two Isabella Oliver tops in their sale (not sure if they have shops though or are only online). Further than that I'm going to go with the layered look on top, so some basic tank-type tops which I can then wear open cardigans or wraps over. I will need maternity tights later on as I'll need to get through the winter somehow!
If you go looking for wrap-style dresses they could likely accomodate the bump without necessarily being maternity (ditto maxi dresses, although I've not tried those as I don't own any!)
Edit: you might be disappointed with in-store offerings though, while most shops do have some maternity clothes I believe the offering is small and might be mostly online (not from personal experience but others on the big-girl's thread have commented!). There is also quite a good maxi dress in New Look I think, will dig it out for you...

"About one percent of all pregnancies end in a missed miscarriage."
It wasn't on a proper medical website though, so take it with a pinch of salt!! If I have a chance I'll try find a proper set of stats for you.
I think you are spot on with your assumption about the bias in those who post on internet forums though.0 -
i'm 22+4 today and am still in my normal clothes, not all of my wardrobe fits still but leggins, maxi dresses, one pair of stretchy jeans (button undone when sitting though!) , most tops etc. I wouldn't buy a size up for maternity clothes or they will be too big!!!
I am a snob too and I haven't found ANY maternity clothes I like so haven't bought anything yet but I will need to soon as I don't have a lot of choice in bottoms at the moment!:jBaby Boy born December 20120 -
Hello just delurking from the main thread to talk about maternity clothes. I normally don't shop in topshop but it is the only place that I have seen anything vaguely interesting. I have been wearing normal tops until this week (29 weeks) but I do like baggy stuff - lots from COS. Now I have got a couple of maternity tops that are so long I am back in my normal jeans as they cover the fact I don't have them done up. Basically I think you need to look everywhere that does maternity and see what you can find, there isn't a great choice unless you go online.
I got some summer dresses in a size up from H&M which are fine, but I do have to wear something underneath as they are still too big on the arm holes etc. They aren't as flattering as maternity dresses either as they make my bum look massive and don't hang totally right so take someone honest shopping with you0 -

Loads of places have a maternity range, but very few of them actually have it in store
ZCrat - I live in Bedford, and I think you're local too? In MK there's a big mamas and papas at the kingston centre (on way in from A421/Bedford side), and I think there's a mothercare there too. M&Ps have the best quality maternity wear I've found so far, I have 2 pairs of their jeans and 1 from Debenhams, and the Debenhams ones are so horrible in comparisonMothercare's clothes seem cheap/poorly made to me, and are quite pricey. New Look and H&M normally have some in store, I've got a few reasonable basics from NL. ASOS.com is also good for basics like vests and leggings.
Next don't stock anything in store, but have a huge range online. I've tried the big one in Centre:MK and the retail park one in Bedford. If you normally shop in Next though, they have their sale on atm and some maternity stuff in it. I don't as I'm the wrong shape for their clothes, so I'm reluctant to order things and have to return them!
I didn't go up a size, I went straight into maternity trousers after my scan, before which I'd been doing up my trousers using a hair band to extend the button! Kept on with normal tops for a few more weeks, but now (23 weeks) all my normal tops are too short so I've started buying maternity ones.
I've found that maternity sizing is very generous, some of the size 16 stuff I've bought hangs off me, especially jeans/trousers on thighs/bum (edit: not normally the case!). There isn't a Jojo's nearby to Bedford, but their clothes are lovely, I've had some as hand-me-downs from my sister! Unlike other ranges the sizing seems true to me, so buy normal size!

Once again, I broke my "not buying anything yet" rule this morning, as digi thermometers (tomee tipee?) were reduced to £5 in Asda.....
2b, I know it's easier said than done, but please try not to worry. I had a bleed around week 4, another week 6-7 and had to go for an early scan, but I was fine. The weekend before last, I bled quite a bit on the Sunday and convinced myself it was a MC, but the next day, baba scanned with a healthy heartbeat.
That said, maybe give your GP/midwife a ring and see if you can get an appt at the EPU? Meanwhile, we are here if you want to chat
Thinking of you, because I know how worrying it can be xx0
