I nearly went back to BT on weekend plan , but changed my miond when i was told ,

    1. A connection charge of 11p for every call made , plus the time of the call itself
2.If i dont make at least 3 calls per month then i get charged an extra £1.50 per month

When i questioned this, the reply

" All the other companies do it too sir "

    BT , PAH !!!!

Although the prices vary, which doesn't at least do '1' then?
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

The Phone Co-op's Caller Plus tariff still has no connection fee - just a 1.2p minimum call charge with per second billing and is available to new customers. Who would have thought a 10-year old tariff would actually be so competitive for certain users!

    It's a bluddy cartel!

It seems that Parliament's Public Acconts Committee near enough agrees with MSE's resident landline phone expert. :)
(although the "overall positive competition" conclusion doesn't actually really fit with most of what they actually say).

I think anyone on here could have quite happily come to the conclusion that Ofcom is a waste of space, too.
  • Hey guys,

So i just got a mail (paperless bill) with the following added.
    Important price update
On 28 April 2011, we're making some changes to the prices of our products and services.

We're increasing our line rental by 30p a month, as well as making changes to the cost of daytime UK calls, call set-up fee, calling features and Standard Broadband Option 1 pricing. To find out more, visit bt.com/pricechanges

We appreciate that price rises are never welcome, which is why we're reducing the price of some of our products and services. For example, BT Vision is now at a new low price of £12.50 per month. And, from 28 April 2011, we will cut the price of our Unlimited Anytime Plan from £5.00 to £4.70 per month.

I am about 1 year into an 18 month contract with Infinity and would like to cancel as I am moving house and want to try a different isp.

Do you think that i can cancel the whole deal due to this or only the part which is affected ie line rental?

More price rises will be along in October I bet, this is becoming a habit of BT now, April and October rises.

I just did. 4 months into an 18 months contract. I asked them to cancel my line rental and automatically they have to cancel broadband too as you cant have BB without phone line. All charges waived. I offered to return the router as its brand new but they said they no.

I'm still waiting my credit from the last BT Price increase in October2010 - I get quarterly billing, and they didn't do it on the last two! Grrr. Good job I've got a name, date+time of the person I spoke to.

It's getting a bit expensive isn't it? I currently have Sky Talk CPS (for cheap BB) but with BT for line rental to allow caller overrides, etc. I tried phoning BT to try and get a discount on my line rental (choose the cancellation option as you'll get put through to a scottish person who actually know what they're talking about rather then residential services because you'll get put through to a guy from an Indian call centre reading from a script) but she refused point blank saying as I have Sky Talk there was absolutely nothing she could do - despite me threatening to switch to Sky or Primus for line rental - looks like they're playing hard ball.

I may just switch to Sky line rental anyway, got to work out call charges etc and see which is the cheaper option.

Hmm just spoke to Sky who said they can put me on £11.25 pcm instead of £12.35 for BT (line rental - £1.25 paper free billing) but they'll charge me £39.xx for a setup fee! I asked about paying a one off advance fee (works out at £9.25 pcm) but they won't offer me that either! Looks like I'm stuck with BT for now. :(
Blessed are the geeks, for they shall inherit the Internet.
  • I've just read this grrr. I've emailed them to ask to cancel my contract (due May 17th) due to the price increases again. Despite requesting to be contacted via email they have just rung. The gentleman said I had to ring on April 17th to cancel it was not possible to cancel before.
I'd better find the relevant part in the T&C and try again.
