My husband and I both have long term medical problems that will last for life, his being a lot worse than me............we have been abroad between hospital admissions and tell the ins company everything ...................

We always get supermarket insurance , any one of the big ones do it, and make sure they know of existing medical probs, we do pay a bit more than a well person ,but its still very cheap we find...........................and its peace of mind.....
Yes I found that as long as you make them aware of any condition it can often be cheaper than a specialist insurance company as with any insurance be honest and get a few quotes.

I'm happy to make it one of my missions in my life to warn people against AXA. Curiously, there was an item on the BBC this morning about a couple who had purchased wedding insurance. Their wedding ended up having to be cancelled due to snowy weather. Well, their insurers refused to pay up in full and surprise, surprise, the policy was underwritten by AXA.

One of AXA's head honchos was interviewed by the BBC, and all of a sudden they agree to pay up. Folks, please avoid AXA. They are nothing but grief.

AXA underwrote the travel insurance that we recently claimed on. No problems at all and the claim was settled very speedily. They were very helpful while we were waiting for my husband to be well enough to be flown home and the travel arrangements were excellent.

I have always used Fortis Insurance since I discovered that they were the only ones not to heavily penalise me for having had a cancer diagnosis along with numerous other conditions.

I only had to agree to this statement to not have to go through medical screening. This is for an annual policy.
The Declaration (Fortis Insurance Policy) - other policies have different medical conditions requirements.

    Nobody:
    • is waiting for an operation, hospital consultation (other than for regular check ups), or other hospital treatment or investigations
    • has received treatment, other than regular medication, in the last 12 months for:-
      • any blood disorder
      • Dialysis treatment
      • Any form of cancer, leukaemia or tumour
      • any psychiatric illness
      • a transplant
      • dementia
    • diagnosed as HIV positive has required treatment for HIV or any HIV related illness
    • has any breathing or heart problems which has needed hospital treatment in the last 12 months
    • has been seen by a specialist in the last three months (other than for regular check ups) or been admitted to hospital overnight
    • nobody has been given a terminal prognosis by a registered doctor
    • I do not know of any reason (medical or otherwise) why the trip is likely to be cut short
Whenever I tried to get insurance via medical screenings, I was either was not insurable or the premium was totally excessive. I'm still on daily medication for cancer, but they allow this (many do not). Some of my other conditions don't feature in this computerised world (osteomyalitis, lymphoedema) and this causes real problems in medical screening.

Thing is, I think the wording has changed since then but I'm unable to find whether this is true (hope not as I will be stuffed!).

I used this site last year to do some comparisons.

Good luck and have a good trip!

My husband has an annual worldwide travel insurance policy with Fortis. He has had it for several years. It is up for renewal on 1st March and the premium has increased by 50%. They have also imposed additional health questions which he cannot pass. They will now not insure him for his existing condition and want to exclude it. This is not acceptable. I have only got one other quote so far including his condition (a minor heart attack 7 years ago) and the premium is £450! This is with City Bond.

He needs worldwide annual insurance with a maximum trip duration of 60 days. Anyone get any other suggestions, please.
  • I've gone with Insurance With in the past. I'm not sure what there policy is this year as these tend to change quite frequently. Worth a shot though.

BTW you're best of giving them a ring to get an accurate quote. When I tried the online quote they wouldn't insure my condition. But when I rang they were very helpful and reasonably priced. Good luck!

What drives me up the wall with this one is that it'd actually cost me more to get decent cover with full health disclosure, for a trip within Europe, than it would to go :( so annoying.
Homosexual, Unitarian, young, British, female, disabled. Do you need more?
  • Excuse my ignorance - personally I do not have any medical conditions apart from mild osteo arthritis ( knees) so I have no trouble getting insurance myself. But DH has osteoarthritis ( worse than mine but not severe), type 2 diabetes controlled by medication, and this past year he has angina, had a few tests, is on medication, no other treatment planned at the moment.

In France, is there anything here that would not be treatable using the EHIC card, if an emergency arose?
I'm not saying we don't have insurance, but not sure what more it would need to cover in terms of medical help in Europe.

I arranged my mothers travel insurance last year, I am fairly sure I used Staysure, and had no problems, when my dad was alive he was a few years older and had more medical conditions and the Co-op was one of the most reasonable annual policies for them both. Hope this helps someone

Tried Insurewith, StaySure and the Co-Op. All declined cover. Getting desperate. Any other suggestions?

I had a nasty feeling that the Fortis insurance had changed.

I really don't know of any others, but having done a bit of googling they seem to suggest using a broker to try and find a good deal.

Have you tried the broker I included in this link
http://www.portwood.co.uk/travel-insurance/online-quotation-system.htm. I only used them online, but might be worth giving them a ring to see what they come up with.

Will be interested in how this goes, as the Fortis insurance was the only reasonable one I found and haven't a clue who to use now. Nothing planned at the moment, but the thought of being permanently trapped in the UK is not a happy prospect. :(
Just in case you were wondering (some have)..... I'm a woman!
